NRSV MAT 03:15 "Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness."

NRSV MAT 04:04 "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

NRSV MAT 04:07 "Again it is written, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

NRSV MAT 04:10 "Away with you, Satan! for it is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"

NRSV MAT 04:17 "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."

NRSV MAT 04:19 "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people."

NRSV MAT 05:03 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 05:04 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

NRSV MAT 05:05 "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

NRSV MAT 05:06 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

NRSV MAT 05:07 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

NRSV MAT 05:08 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

NRSV MAT 05:09 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

NRSV MAT 05:10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 05:11 "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

NRSV MAT 05:12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

NRSV MAT 05:13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

NRSV MAT 05:14 "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.

NRSV MAT 05:15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house.

NRSV MAT 05:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 05:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil.

NRSV MAT 05:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

NRSV MAT 05:19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 05:20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 05:21 "You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not murder;' and 'whoever murders shall be liable to judgement.'

NRSV MAT 05:22 But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgement; and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, 'You fool,' you will be liable to the hell of fire.

NRSV MAT 05:23 So when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you,

NRSV MAT 05:24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift.

NRSV MAT 05:25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.

NRSV MAT 05:26 Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

NRSV MAT 05:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

NRSV MAT 05:28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

NRSV MAT 05:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

NRSV MAT 05:30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell.

NRSV MAT 05:31 "It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'

NRSV MAT 05:32 But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

NRSV MAT 05:33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, 'You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.'

NRSV MAT 05:34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

NRSV MAT 05:35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

NRSV MAT 05:36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

NRSV MAT 05:37 Let your word be 'Yes, Yes' or 'No, No;' anything more than this comes from the evil one.

NRSV MAT 05:38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'

NRSV MAT 05:39 But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also;

NRSV MAT 05:40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well;

NRSV MAT 05:41 and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile.

NRSV MAT 05:42 Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

NRSV MAT 05:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy.'

NRSV MAT 05:44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

NRSV MAT 05:45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.

NRSV MAT 05:46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

NRSV MAT 05:47 And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

NRSV MAT 05:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

NRSV MAT 06:01 "Beware of practising your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 06:02 "So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

NRSV MAT 06:03 But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

NRSV MAT 06:04 so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

NRSV MAT 06:05 "And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

NRSV MAT 06:06 But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

NRSV MAT 06:07 "When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words.

NRSV MAT 06:08 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

NRSV MAT 06:09 "Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

NRSV MAT 06:10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

NRSV MAT 06:11 Give us this day our daily bread.

NRSV MAT 06:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

NRSV MAT 06:13 And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

NRSV MAT 06:14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you;

NRSV MAT 06:15 but if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

NRSV MAT 06:16 "And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

NRSV MAT 06:17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

NRSV MAT 06:18 so that your fasting may be seen not by others but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

NRSV MAT 06:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal;

NRSV MAT 06:20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.

NRSV MAT 06:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

NRSV MAT 06:22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light;

NRSV MAT 06:23 but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

NRSV MAT 06:24 "No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

NRSV MAT 06:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

NRSV MAT 06:26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

NRSV MAT 06:27 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?

NRSV MAT 06:28 And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin,

NRSV MAT 06:29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

NRSV MAT 06:30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you - you of little faith?

NRSV MAT 06:31 Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What will we eat?' or 'What will we drink?' or 'What will we wear?'

NRSV MAT 06:32 For it is the Gentiles who strive for all these things; and indeed your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

NRSV MAT 06:33 But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

NRSV MAT 06:34 "So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today's trouble is enough for today.

NRSV MAT 07:01 "Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.

NRSV MAT 07:02 For with the judgement you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.

NRSV MAT 07:03 Why do you see the speck in your neighbour's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?

NRSV MAT 07:04 Or how can you say to your neighbour, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' while the log is in your own eye?

NRSV MAT 07:05 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour's eye.

NRSV MAT 07:06 "Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.

NRSV MAT 07:07 "Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.

NRSV MAT 07:08 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

NRSV MAT 07:09 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone?

NRSV MAT 07:10 Or if the child asks for a fish, will give a snake?

NRSV MAT 07:11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

NRSV MAT 07:12 "In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.

NRSV MAT 07:13 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it.

NRSV MAT 07:14 For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

NRSV MAT 07:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

NRSV MAT 07:16 You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?

NRSV MAT 07:17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit.

NRSV MAT 07:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.

NRSV MAT 07:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

NRSV MAT 07:20 Thus you will know them by their fruits.

NRSV MAT 07:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 07:22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?'

NRSV MAT 07:23 Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.'

NRSV MAT 07:24 "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.

NRSV MAT 07:25 The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.

NRSV MAT 07:26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

NRSV MAT 07:27 The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell - and great was its fall!"

NRSV MAT 08:03 "I do choose. Be made clean!"

NRSV MAT 08:04 "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

NRSV MAT 08:07 "I will come and cure him."

NRSV MAT 08:10 "Truly I tell you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.

NRSV MAT 08:11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,

NRSV MAT 08:12 while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

NRSV MAT 08:13 "Go; let it be done for you according to your faith."

NRSV MAT 08:20 "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."

NRSV MAT 08:22 "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

NRSV MAT 08:26 "Why are you afraid, you of little faith?"

NRSV MAT 08:32 "Go!"

NRSV MAT 09:02 "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."

NRSV MAT 09:04 "Why do you think evil in your hearts?

NRSV MAT 09:05 For which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Stand up and walk?'

NRSV MAT 09:06 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" . . . "Stand up, take your bed and go to your home."

NRSV MAT 09:09 "Follow me."

NRSV MAT 09:12 "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

NRSV MAT 09:13 Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

NRSV MAT 09:15 "The wedding-guests cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

NRSV MAT 09:16 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak, for the patch pulls away from the cloak, and a worse tear is made.

NRSV MAT 09:17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins; otherwise, the skins burst, and the wine is spilled, and the skins are destroyed; but new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved."

NRSV MAT 09:22 "Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well."

NRSV MAT 09:24 "Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping."

NRSV MAT 09:28 "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"

NRSV MAT 09:29 "According to your faith let it be done to you."

NRSV MAT 09:30 "See that no one knows of this."

NRSV MAT 09:37 "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few;

NRSV MAT 09:38 therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest."

NRSV MAT 10:05 "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans,

NRSV MAT 10:06 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

NRSV MAT 10:07 As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'

NRSV MAT 10:08 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.

NRSV MAT 10:09 Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts,

NRSV MAT 10:10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for labourers deserve their food.

NRSV MAT 10:11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave.

NRSV MAT 10:12 As you enter the house, greet it.

NRSV MAT 10:13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.

NRSV MAT 10:14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.

NRSV MAT 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgement than for that town.

NRSV MAT 10:16 "See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

NRSV MAT 10:17 Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues;

NRSV MAT 10:18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles.

NRSV MAT 10:19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time;

NRSV MAT 10:20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

NRSV MAT 10:21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;

NRSV MAT 10:22 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

NRSV MAT 10:23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

NRSV MAT 10:24 "A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master;

NRSV MAT 10:25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!

NRSV MAT 10:26 "So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.

NRSV MAT 10:27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.

NRSV MAT 10:28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

NRSV MAT 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground unperceived by your Father.

NRSV MAT 10:30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted.

NRSV MAT 10:31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

NRSV MAT 10:32 "Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven;

NRSV MAT 10:33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 10:34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.

NRSV MAT 10:35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

NRSV MAT 10:36 and one's foes will be members of one's own household.

NRSV MAT 10:37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;

NRSV MAT 10:38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

NRSV MAT 10:39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

NRSV MAT 10:40 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

NRSV MAT 10:41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous;

NRSV MAT 10:42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple - truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."

NRSV MAT 11:04 "Go and tell John what you hear and see:

NRSV MAT 11:05 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them.

NRSV MAT 11:06 And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me."

NRSV MAT 11:07 "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?

NRSV MAT 11:08 What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces.

NRSV MAT 11:09 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

NRSV MAT 11:10 This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

NRSV MAT 11:11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

NRSV MAT 11:12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.

NRSV MAT 11:13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came;

NRSV MAT 11:14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.

NRSV MAT 11:15 Let anyone with ears listen!

NRSV MAT 11:16 "But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another,

NRSV MAT 11:17 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.'

NRSV MAT 11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon;'

NRSV MAT 11:19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds."

NRSV MAT 11:21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

NRSV MAT 11:22 But I tell you, on the day of judgement it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

NRSV MAT 11:23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

NRSV MAT 11:24 But I tell you that on the day of judgement it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you."

NRSV MAT 11:25 "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants;

NRSV MAT 11:26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

NRSV MAT 11:27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

NRSV MAT 11:28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

NRSV MAT 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

NRSV MAT 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

NRSV MAT 12:03 "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

NRSV MAT 12:04 He entered the house of God and ate the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him or his companions to eat, but only for the priests.

NRSV MAT 12:05 Or have you not read in the law that on the sabbath the priests in the temple break the sabbath and yet are guiltless?

NRSV MAT 12:06 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.

NRSV MAT 12:07 But if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless.

NRSV MAT 12:08 For the Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

NRSV MAT 12:11 "Suppose one of you has only one sheep and it falls into a pit on the sabbath; will you not lay hold of it and lift it out?

NRSV MAT 12:12 How much more valuable is a human being than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the sabbath."

NRSV MAT 12:13 "Stretch out your hand."

NRSV MAT 12:25 "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.

NRSV MAT 12:26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand?

NRSV MAT 12:27 If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

NRSV MAT 12:28 But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

NRSV MAT 12:29 Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his property, without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered.

NRSV MAT 12:30 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

NRSV MAT 12:31 Therefore I tell you, people will be forgiven for every sin and blasphemy, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.

NRSV MAT 12:32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

NRSV MAT 12:33 "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit.

NRSV MAT 12:34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good things, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

NRSV MAT 12:35 The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure.

NRSV MAT 12:36 I tell you, on the day of judgement you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter;

NRSV MAT 12:37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

NRSV MAT 12:39 "An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

NRSV MAT 12:40 For just as Jonah was for three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so for three days and three nights the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth.

NRSV MAT 12:41 The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

NRSV MAT 12:42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here!

NRSV MAT 12:43 "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting-place, but it finds none.

NRSV MAT 12:44 Then it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order.

NRSV MAT 12:45 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation."

NRSV MAT 12:48 "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"

NRSV MAT 12:49 "Here are my mother and my brothers!

NRSV MAT 12:50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

NRSV MAT 13:03 "Listen! A sower went out to sow.

NRSV MAT 13:04 And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up.

NRSV MAT 13:05 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil.

NRSV MAT 13:06 But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away.

NRSV MAT 13:07 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.

NRSV MAT 13:08 Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

NRSV MAT 13:09 Let anyone with ears listen!"

NRSV MAT 13:11 "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.

NRSV MAT 13:12 For to those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.

NRSV MAT 13:13 The reason I speak to them in parables is that 'seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen, nor do they understand.'

NRSV MAT 13:14 With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah that says: 'You will indeed listen, but never understand, and you will indeed look, but never perceive.

NRSV MAT 13:15 For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are hard of hearing, and they have shut their eyes; so that they might not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and understand with their heart and turn - and I would heal them.'

NRSV MAT 13:16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.

NRSV MAT 13:17 Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.

NRSV MAT 13:18 "Hear then the parable of the sower.

NRSV MAT 13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path.

NRSV MAT 13:20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy;

NRSV MAT 13:21 yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away.

NRSV MAT 13:22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing.

NRSV MAT 13:23 But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."

NRSV MAT 13:24 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field;

NRSV MAT 13:25 but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and then went away.

NRSV MAT 13:26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared as well.

NRSV MAT 13:27 And the slaves of the householder came and said to him, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, then, did these weeds come from?'

NRSV MAT 13:28 He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' The slaves said to him, 'Then do you want us to go and gather them?'

NRSV MAT 13:29 But he replied, 'No; for in gathering the weeds you would uproot the wheat along with them.

NRSV MAT 13:30 Let both of them grow together until the harvest; and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Collect the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.'"

NRSV MAT 13:31 "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field;

NRSV MAT 13:32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches."

NRSV MAT 13:33 "The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

NRSV MAT 13:37 "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man;

NRSV MAT 13:38 the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one,

NRSV MAT 13:39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.

NRSV MAT 13:40 Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age.

NRSV MAT 13:41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers,

NRSV MAT 13:42 and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

NRSV MAT 13:43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!

NRSV MAT 13:44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

NRSV MAT 13:45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls;

NRSV MAT 13:46 on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.

NRSV MAT 13:47 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind;

NRSV MAT 13:48 when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad.

NRSV MAT 13:49 So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous

NRSV MAT 13:50 and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

NRSV MAT 13:51 "Have you understood all this?"

NRSV MAT 13:52 "Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old."

NRSV MAT 13:57 "Prophets are not without honour except in their own country and in their own house."

NRSV MAT 14:16 "They need not go away; you give them something to eat."

NRSV MAT 14:18 "Bring them here to me."

NRSV MAT 14:27 "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid."

NRSV MAT 14:29 "Come."

NRSV MAT 14:31 "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

NRSV MAT 15:03 "And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?

NRSV MAT 15:04 For God said, 'Honour your father and your mother,' and, 'Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.'

NRSV MAT 15:05 But you say that whoever tells father or mother, 'Whatever support you might have had from me is given to God,' then that person need not honour the father.

NRSV MAT 15:06 So, for the sake of your tradition, you make void the word of God

NRSV MAT 15:07 You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:

NRSV MAT 15:08 'This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;

NRSV MAT 15:09 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.'"

NRSV MAT 15:10 "Listen and understand:

NRSV MAT 15:11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles."

NRSV MAT 15:13 "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.

NRSV MAT 15:14 Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit."

NRSV MAT 15:16 "Are you also still without understanding?

NRSV MAT 15:17 Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?

NRSV MAT 15:18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles.

NRSV MAT 15:19 For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander.

NRSV MAT 15:20 These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile."

NRSV MAT 15:24 "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

NRSV MAT 15:26 "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs."

NRSV MAT 15:28 "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish."

NRSV MAT 15:32 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way."

NRSV MAT 15:34 "How many loaves have you?"

NRSV MAT 16:02 "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'

NRSV MAT 16:03 And in the morning, 'It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

NRSV MAT 16:04 An evil and adulterous generation asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah."

NRSV MAT 16:06 "Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."

NRSV MAT 16:08 "You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread?

NRSV MAT 16:09 Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?

NRSV MAT 16:10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered?

NRSV MAT 16:11 How could you fail to perceive that I was not speaking about bread? Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!"

NRSV MAT 16:13 "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

NRSV MAT 16:15 "But who do you say that I am?"

NRSV MAT 16:17 "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

NRSV MAT 16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."

NRSV MAT 16:23 "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

NRSV MAT 16:24 "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

NRSV MAT 16:25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.

NRSV MAT 16:26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?

NRSV MAT 16:27 "For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.

NRSV MAT 16:28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

NRSV MAT 17:07 "Get up and do not be afraid."

NRSV MAT 17:09 "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead."

NRSV MAT 17:11 "Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things;

NRSV MAT 17:12 but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands."

NRSV MAT 17:17 "You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him here to me."

NRSV MAT 17:20 "Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."

NRSV MAT 17:21 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities add verse 21, "But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting."

NRSV MAT 17:22 "The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands,

NRSV MAT 17:23 and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised."

NRSV MAT 17:25 "What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tribute? From their children or from others?"

NRSV MAT 17:26 "Then the children are free.

NRSV MAT 17:27 However, so that we do not give offence to them, go to the lake and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it to them for you and me."

NRSV MAT 18:03 "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 18:04 Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 18:05 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

NRSV MAT 18:06 "If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea.

NRSV MAT 18:07 Woe to the world because of stumbling-blocks! Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to the one by whom the stumbling-block comes!

NRSV MAT 18:08 "If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than to have two hands or two feet and to be thrown into the eternal fire.

NRSV MAT 18:09 And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into the hell of fire.

NRSV MAT 18:10 "Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 18:11 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities add verse 11, "For the Son of Man came to save the lost."

NRSV MAT 18:12 What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?

NRSV MAT 18:13 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

NRSV MAT 18:14 So it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones should be lost.

NRSV MAT 18:15 "If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one.

NRSV MAT 18:16 But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

NRSV MAT 18:17 If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

NRSV MAT 18:18 Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

NRSV MAT 18:19 Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.

NRSV MAT 18:20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them."

NRSV MAT 18:22 "Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.

NRSV MAT 18:23 "For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves.

NRSV MAT 18:24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him;

NRSV MAT 18:25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made.

NRSV MAT 18:26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.'

NRSV MAT 18:27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt.

NRSV MAT 18:28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow-slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, 'Pay what you owe.'

NRSV MAT 18:29 Then his fellow-slave fell down and pleaded with him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.'

NRSV MAT 18:30 But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he should pay the debt.

NRSV MAT 18:31 When his fellow-slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.

NRSV MAT 18:32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.

NRSV MAT 18:33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow-slave, as I had mercy on you?'

NRSV MAT 18:34 And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he should pay his entire debt.

NRSV MAT 18:35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart."

NRSV MAT 19:04 "Have you not read that the one who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,'

NRSV MAT 19:05 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?'

NRSV MAT 19:06 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

NRSV MAT 19:08 "It was because you were so hard-hearted that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but at the beginning it was not so.

NRSV MAT 19:09 And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity, and marries another commits adultery."

NRSV MAT 19:11 "Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given.

NRSV MAT 19:12 For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can."

NRSV MAT 19:14 "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs."

NRSV MAT 19:17 "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."

NRSV MAT 19:18 "You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;

NRSV MAT 19:19 Honour your father and mother; also, You shall love your neighbour as yourself."

NRSV MAT 19:21 "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."

NRSV MAT 19:23 "Truly I tell you, it will be hard for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven.

NRSV MAT 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

NRSV MAT 19:26 "For mortals it is impossible, but for God all things are possible."

NRSV MAT 19:28 "Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man is seated on the throne of his glory, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

NRSV MAT 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold, and will inherit eternal life.

NRSV MAT 19:30 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.

NRSV MAT 20:01 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard.

NRSV MAT 20:02 After agreeing with the labourers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard.

NRSV MAT 20:03 When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the market-place;

NRSV MAT 20:04 and he said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' So they went.

NRSV MAT 20:05 When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the same.

NRSV MAT 20:06 And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, 'Why are you standing here idle all day?'

NRSV MAT 20:07 They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard.'

NRSV MAT 20:08 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call the labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.'

NRSV MAT 20:09 When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.

NRSV MAT 20:10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage.

NRSV MAT 20:11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner,

NRSV MAT 20:12 saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.'

NRSV MAT 20:13 But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage?

NRSV MAT 20:14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you.

NRSV MAT 20:15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?'

NRSV MAT 20:16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last."

NRSV MAT 20:18 "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death;

NRSV MAT 20:19 then they will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified; and on the third day he will be raised."

NRSV MAT 20:21 "What do you want?"

NRSV MAT 20:22 "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?"

NRSV MAT 20:23 "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."

NRSV MAT 20:25 "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.

NRSV MAT 20:26 It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant,

NRSV MAT 20:27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave;

NRSV MAT 20:28 just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."

NRSV MAT 20:32 "What do you want me to do for you?"

NRSV MAT 21:02 "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me.

NRSV MAT 21:03 If anyone says anything to you, just say this, 'The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately."

NRSV MAT 21:13 "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer;' but you are making it a den of robbers."

NRSV MAT 21:16 "Yes; have you never read, 'Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself?'"

NRSV MAT 21:19 "May no fruit ever come from you again!"

NRSV MAT 21:21 "Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done.

NRSV MAT 21:22 Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive."

NRSV MAT 21:24 "I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things.

NRSV MAT 21:25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?"

NRSV MAT 21:27 "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

NRSV MAT 21:28 "What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'

NRSV MAT 21:29 He answered, 'I will not;' but later he changed his mind and went.

NRSV MAT 21:30 The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, 'I go, sir;' but he did not go.

NRSV MAT 21:31 Which of the two did the will of his father?" . . . "Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you.

NRSV MAT 21:32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

NRSV MAT 21:33 "Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country.

NRSV MAT 21:34 When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce.

NRSV MAT 21:35 But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.

NRSV MAT 21:36 Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way.

NRSV MAT 21:37 Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

NRSV MAT 21:38 But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.'

NRSV MAT 21:39 So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

NRSV MAT 21:40 Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?"

NRSV MAT 21:42 "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes?'

NRSV MAT 21:43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.

NRSV MAT 21:44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."

NRSV MAT 22:02 "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son.

NRSV MAT 22:03 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come.

NRSV MAT 22:04 Again he sent other slaves, saying, 'Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.'

NRSV MAT 22:05 But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business,

NRSV MAT 22:06 while the rest seized his slaves, maltreated them, and killed them.

NRSV MAT 22:07 The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

NRSV MAT 22:08 Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.

NRSV MAT 22:09 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.'

NRSV MAT 22:10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

NRSV MAT 22:11 "But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe,

NRSV MAT 22:12 and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?' And he was speechless.

NRSV MAT 22:13 Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

NRSV MAT 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen."

NRSV MAT 22:18 "Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites?

NRSV MAT 22:19 show me the coin used for the tax."

NRSV MAT 22:20 "Whose head is this, and whose title?"

NRSV MAT 22:21 "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."

NRSV MAT 22:29 "You are wrong, because you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God.

NRSV MAT 22:30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

NRSV MAT 22:31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was said to you by God,

NRSV MAT 22:32 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?' He is God not of the dead, but of the living."

NRSV MAT 22:37 "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

NRSV MAT 22:38 This is the greatest and first commandment.

NRSV MAT 22:39 And a second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.'

NRSV MAT 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

NRSV MAT 22:42 "What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?"

NRSV MAT 22:43 "How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,

NRSV MAT 22:44 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet?"'

NRSV MAT 22:45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?"

NRSV MAT 23:02 "The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat;

NRSV MAT 23:03 therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practise what they teach.

NRSV MAT 23:04 They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them.

NRSV MAT 23:05 They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long.

NRSV MAT 23:06 They love to have the place of honour at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues,

NRSV MAT 23:07 and to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have people call them rabbi.

NRSV MAT 23:08 But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students.

NRSV MAT 23:09 And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father - the one in heaven.

NRSV MAT 23:10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah.

NRSV MAT 23:11 The greatest among you will be your servant.

NRSV MAT 23:12 All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

NRSV MAT 23:13 "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them.

NRSV MAT 23:14 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other authorities add here (or after verse 12) verse 14, "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance you make long prayers; therefore you will receive the greater condemnation"

NRSV MAT 23:15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

NRSV MAT 23:16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the sanctuary is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the sanctuary is bound by the oath.'

NRSV MAT 23:17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the sanctuary that has made the gold sacred?

NRSV MAT 23:18 And you say, 'Whoever swears by the altar is bound by nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is on the altar is bound by the oath.'

NRSV MAT 23:19 How blind you are! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

NRSV MAT 23:20 So whoever swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it;

NRSV MAT 23:21 and whoever swears by the sanctuary, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it;

NRSV MAT 23:22 and whoever swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who is seated upon it.

NRSV MAT 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practised without neglecting the others.

NRSV MAT 23:24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel!

NRSV MAT 23:25 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.

NRSV MAT 23:26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean.

NRSV MAT 23:27 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth.

NRSV MAT 23:28 So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

NRSV MAT 23:29 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous,

NRSV MAT 23:30 and you say, 'If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.'

NRSV MAT 23:31 Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

NRSV MAT 23:32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors.

NRSV MAT 23:33 You snakes, you brood of vipers! How can you escape being sentenced to hell?

NRSV MAT 23:34 Therefore I send you prophets, sages, and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town,

NRSV MAT 23:35 so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.

NRSV MAT 23:36 Truly I tell you, all this will come upon this generation.

NRSV MAT 23:37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

NRSV MAT 23:38 See, your house is left to you, desolate.

NRSV MAT 23:39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

NRSV MAT 24:02 "You see all these, do you not? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down."

NRSV MAT 24:04 "Beware that no one leads you astray.

NRSV MAT 24:05 For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Messiah!' and they will lead many astray.

NRSV MAT 24:06 And you will hear of wars and rumours of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet.

NRSV MAT 24:07 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places:

NRSV MAT 24:08 all this is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

NRSV MAT 24:09 "Then they will hand you over to be tortured and will put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name.

NRSV MAT 24:10 Then many will fall away, and they will betray one another and hate one another.

NRSV MAT 24:11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray.

NRSV MAT 24:12 And because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold.

NRSV MAT 24:13 But anyone who endures to the end will be saved.

NRSV MAT 24:14 And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations; and then the end will come.

NRSV MAT 24:15 "So when you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place, as was spoken of by the prophet Daniel

NRSV MAT 24:16 then those in Judea must flee to the mountains;

NRSV MAT 24:17 someone on the housetop must not go down to take what is in the house;

NRSV MAT 24:18 someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat.

NRSV MAT 24:19 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days!

NRSV MAT 24:20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a sabbath.

NRSV MAT 24:21 For at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.

NRSV MAT 24:22 And if those days had not been cut short, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.

NRSV MAT 24:23 Then if anyone says to you, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!' or 'There he is!' - do not believe it.

NRSV MAT 24:24 For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce great signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

NRSV MAT 24:25 Take note, I have told you beforehand.

NRSV MAT 24:26 So, if they say to you, 'Look! He is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look! He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it.

NRSV MAT 24:27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

NRSV MAT 24:28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

NRSV MAT 24:29 "Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken.

NRSV MAT 24:30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory.

NRSV MAT 24:31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

NRSV MAT 24:32 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near.

NRSV MAT 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.

NRSV MAT 24:34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

NRSV MAT 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

NRSV MAT 24:36 "But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

NRSV MAT 24:37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

NRSV MAT 24:38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark,

NRSV MAT 24:39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man.

NRSV MAT 24:40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

NRSV MAT 24:41 Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left.

NRSV MAT 24:42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.

NRSV MAT 24:43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into.

NRSV MAT 24:44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

NRSV MAT 24:45 "Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time?

NRSV MAT 24:46 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.

NRSV MAT 24:47 Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions.

NRSV MAT 24:48 But if that wicked slave says to himself, 'My master is delayed,'

NRSV MAT 24:49 and he begins to beat his fellow-slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards,

NRSV MAT 24:50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know.

NRSV MAT 24:51 He will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

NRSV MAT 25:01 "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.

NRSV MAT 25:02 Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

NRSV MAT 25:03 When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them;

NRSV MAT 25:04 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.

NRSV MAT 25:05 As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept.

NRSV MAT 25:06 But at midnight there was a shout, 'Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.'

NRSV MAT 25:07 Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps.

NRSV MAT 25:08 The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.'

NRSV MAT 25:09 But the wise replied, 'No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.'

NRSV MAT 25:10 And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut.

NRSV MAT 25:11 Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.'

NRSV MAT 25:12 But he replied, 'Truly I tell you, I do not know you.'

NRSV MAT 25:13 Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

NRSV MAT 25:14 "For it is as if a man, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them;

NRSV MAT 25:15 to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.

NRSV MAT 25:16 The one who had received the five talents went off at once and traded with them, and made five more talents.

NRSV MAT 25:17 In the same way, the one who had the two talents made two more talents.

NRSV MAT 25:18 But the one who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money.

NRSV MAT 25:19 After a long time the master of those slaves came and settled accounts with them.

NRSV MAT 25:20 Then the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five more talents, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me five talents; see, I have made five more talents.'

NRSV MAT 25:21 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'

NRSV MAT 25:22 And the one with the two talents also came forward, saying, 'Master, you handed over to me two talents; see, I have made two more talents.'

NRSV MAT 25:23 His master said to him, 'Well done, good and trustworthy slave; you have been trustworthy in a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'

NRSV MAT 25:24 Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, 'Master, I knew that you were a harsh man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed;

NRSV MAT 25:25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here you have what is yours.'

NRSV MAT 25:26 But his master replied, 'You wicked and lazy slave! You knew, did you, that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter?

NRSV MAT 25:27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have received what was my own with interest.

NRSV MAT 25:28 So take the talent from him, and give it to the one with the ten talents.

NRSV MAT 25:29 For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.

NRSV MAT 25:30 As for this worthless slave, throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

NRSV MAT 25:31 '"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory.

NRSV MAT 25:32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats,

NRSV MAT 25:33 and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left.

NRSV MAT 25:34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world;

NRSV MAT 25:35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,

NRSV MAT 25:36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.'

NRSV MAT 25:37 Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink?

NRSV MAT 25:38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing?

NRSV MAT 25:39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?'

NRSV MAT 25:40 And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.'

NRSV MAT 25:41 Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'You that are accursed, depart from me into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels;

NRSV MAT 25:42 for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,

NRSV MAT 25:43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not give me clothing, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.'

NRSV MAT 25:44 Then they also will answer, 'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not take care of you?"

NRSV MAT 25:45 Then he will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.'

NRSV MAT 25:46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

NRSV MAT 26:02 "You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

NRSV MAT 26:10 "Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me.

NRSV MAT 26:11 For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me.

NRSV MAT 26:12 By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial.

NRSV MAT 26:13 Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her."

NRSV MAT 26:18 "Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, 'The Teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.'"

NRSV MAT 26:21 "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me."

NRSV MAT 26:23 "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.

NRSV MAT 26:24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born."

NRSV MAT 26:25 "You have said so."

NRSV MAT 26:26 "Take, eat; this is my body."

NRSV MAT 26:27 "Drink from it, all of you;

NRSV MAT 26:28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

NRSV MAT 26:29 I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."

NRSV MAT 26:31 "You will all become deserters because of me this night; for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'

NRSV MAT 26:32 But after I am raised up, I will go ahead of you to Galilee."

NRSV MAT 26:34 "Truly I tell you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."

NRSV MAT 26:36 "Sit here while I go over there and pray."

NRSV MAT 26:38 "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me."

NRSV MAT 26:39 "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want."

NRSV MAT 26:40 "So, could you not stay awake with me one hour?

NRSV MAT 26:41 Stay awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

NRSV MAT 26:42 "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."

NRSV MAT 26:45 "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

NRSV MAT 26:46 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand."

NRSV MAT 26:50 "Friend, do what you are here to do."

NRSV MAT 26:52 "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

NRSV MAT 26:53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?

NRSV MAT 26:54 But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?"

NRSV MAT 26:55 "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me.

NRSV MAT 26:56 But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled."

NRSV MAT 26:64 "You have said so. But I tell you, From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven."

NRSV MAT 26:75 "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times."

NRSV MAT 27:11 "You say so."

NRSV MAT 27:46 "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" . . . "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

NRSV MAT 27:63 'After three days I will rise again.'

NRSV MAT 28:09 "Greetings!"

NRSV MAT 28:10 "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me."

NRSV MAT 28:18 "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

NRSV MAT 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

NRSV MAT 28:20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

The Gospel According to St. Mark (MAR)
(Goto Top)

NRSV MAR 01:15 "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news."

NRSV MAR 01:17 "Follow me and I will make you fish for people."

NRSV MAR 01:25 "Be silent, and come out of him!"

NRSV MAR 01:38 "Let us go on to the neighbouring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do."

NRSV MAR 01:41 "I do choose. Be made clean!"

NRSV MAR 01:44 "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

NRSV MAR 02:05 "Son, your sins are forgiven."

NRSV MAR 02:08 "Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?

NRSV MAR 02:09 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Stand up and take your mat and walk?'

NRSV MAR 02:10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"

NRSV MAR 02:11 "I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home."

NRSV MAR 02:14 "Follow me."

NRSV MAR 02:17 "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

NRSV MAR 02:19 "The wedding-guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.

NRSV MAR 02:20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.

NRSV MAR 02:21 "No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made.

NRSV MAR 02:22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins."

NRSV MAR 02:25 "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food?

NRSV MAR 02:26 He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions."

NRSV MAR 02:27 "The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath;

NRSV MAR 02:28 so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath."

NRSV MAR 03:03 "Come forward."

NRSV MAR 03:04 "Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?"

NRSV MAR 03:05 "Stretch out your hand."

NRSV MAR 03:23 "How can Satan cast out Satan?

NRSV MAR 03:24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

NRSV MAR 03:25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.

NRSV MAR 03:26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but his end has come.

NRSV MAR 03:27 But no one can enter a strong man's house and plunder his property without first tying up the strong man; then indeed the house can be plundered.

NRSV MAR 03:28 "Truly I tell you, people will be forgiven for their sins and whatever blasphemies they utter;

NRSV MAR 03:29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit can never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"

NRSV MAR 03:33 "Who are my mother and my brothers?"

NRSV MAR 03:34 "Here are my mother and my brothers!

NRSV MAR 03:35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother."

NRSV MAR 04:03 "Listen! A sower went out to sow.

NRSV MAR 04:04 And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

NRSV MAR 04:05 Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up quickly, since it had no depth of soil.

NRSV MAR 04:06 And when the sun rose, it was scorched; and since it had no root, it withered away.

NRSV MAR 04:07 Other seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no grain.

NRSV MAR 04:08 Other seed fell into good soil and brought forth grain, growing up and increasing and yielding thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

NRSV MAR 04:09 "Let anyone with ears to hear listen!"

NRSV MAR 04:11 "To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside, everything comes in parables;

NRSV MAR 04:12 in order that 'they may indeed look, but not perceive, and may indeed listen, but not understand; so that they may not turn again and be forgiven.'"

NRSV MAR 04:13 "Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand all the parables?

NRSV MAR 04:14 The sower sows the word.

NRSV MAR 04:15 These are the ones on the path where the word is sown: when they hear, Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that is sown in them.

NRSV MAR 04:16 And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: when they hear the word, they immediately receive it with joy.

NRSV MAR 04:17 But they have no root, and endure only for a while; then, when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.

NRSV MAR 04:18 And others are those sown among the thorns: these are the ones who hear the word,

NRSV MAR 04:19 but the cares of the world, and the lure of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it yields nothing.

NRSV MAR 04:20 And these are the ones sown on the good soil: they hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirty and sixty and a hundredfold."

NRSV MAR 04:21 "Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand?

NRSV MAR 04:22 For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light.

NRSV MAR 04:23 Let anyone with ears to hear listen!"

NRSV MAR 04:24 "Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.

NRSV MAR 04:25 For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away."

NRSV MAR 04:26 "The kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground,

NRSV MAR 04:27 and would sleep and rise night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.

NRSV MAR 04:28 The earth produces of itself, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head.

NRSV MAR 04:29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he goes in with his sickle, because the harvest has come."

NRSV MAR 04:30 "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable will we use for it?

NRSV MAR 04:31 It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth;

NRSV MAR 04:32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."

NRSV MAR 04:35 "Let us go across to the other side."

NRSV MAR 04:39 "Peace! Be still!"

NRSV MAR 04:40 "Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?"

NRSV MAR 05:08 "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

NRSV MAR 05:09 "What is your name?"

NRSV MAR 05:19 "Go home to your friends, and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and what mercy he has shown you."

NRSV MAR 05:30 "Who touched my clothes?"

NRSV MAR 05:31 'Who touched me?'"

NRSV MAR 05:34 "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease."

NRSV MAR 05:36 "Do not fear, only believe."

NRSV MAR 05:39 "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping."

NRSV MAR 05:41 "Talitha cum," . . . "Little girl, get up!"

NRSV MAR 06:04 "Prophets are not without honour, except in their home town, and among their own kin, and in their own house."

NRSV MAR 06:08 NO QUOTE GIVEN

NRSV MAR 06:09 NO QUOTE GIVEN

NRSV MAR 06:10 "Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.

NRSV MAR 06:11 If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them."

NRSV MAR 06:31 "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while."

NRSV MAR 06:37 "You give them something to eat."

NRSV MAR 06:38 "How many loaves have you? Go and see."

NRSV MAR 06:50 "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid."

NRSV MAR 07:06 "Isaiah prophesied rightly about you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honours me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me;

NRSV MAR 07:07 in vain do they worship me, teaching human precepts as doctrines.'

NRSV MAR 07:08 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

NRSV MAR 07:09 "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition!

NRSV MAR 07:10 For Moses said, 'Honour your father and your mother;' and, 'Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must surely die.'

NRSV MAR 07:11 But you say that if anyone tells father or mother, 'Whatever support you might have had from me is Corban'

NRSV MAR 07:12 then you no longer permit doing anything for a father or mother,

NRSV MAR 07:13 thus making void the word of God through your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many things like this."

NRSV MAR 07:14 "Listen to me, all of you, and understand:

NRSV MAR 07:15 there is nothing outside a person that by going in can defile, but the things that come out are what defile."

NRSV MAR 07:16 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities add verse 16, 'Let anyone with ears to hear listen.'

NRSV MAR 07:18 "Then do you also fail to understand? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile,

NRSV MAR 07:19 since it enters, not the heart but the stomach, and goes out into the sewer?"

NRSV MAR 07:20 "It is what comes out of a person that defiles.

NRSV MAR 07:21 For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder,

NRSV MAR 07:22 adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly.

NRSV MAR 07:23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person."

NRSV MAR 07:27 "Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs."

NRSV MAR 07:29 "For saying that, you may go - the demon has left your daughter."

NRSV MAR 07:34 "Ephphatha," . . . "Be opened."

NRSV MAR 08:02 "I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.

NRSV MAR 08:03 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way - and some of them have come from a great distance."

NRSV MAR 08:05 "How many loaves do you have?"

NRSV MAR 08:12 "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation."

NRSV MAR 08:15 "Watch out - beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod."

NRSV MAR 08:17 "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?

NRSV MAR 08:18 Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember?

NRSV MAR 08:19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?"

NRSV MAR 08:20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?"

NRSV MAR 08:21 "Do you not yet understand?"

NRSV MAR 08:23 "Can you see anything?"

NRSV MAR 08:26 "Do not even go into the village."

NRSV MAR 08:27 "Who do people say that I am?"

NRSV MAR 08:29 "But who do you say that I am?"

NRSV MAR 08:31 NO QUOTE GIVEN

NRSV MAR 08:33 "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

NRSV MAR 08:34 "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

NRSV MAR 08:35 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.

NRSV MAR 08:36 For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life?

NRSV MAR 08:37 Indeed, what can they give in return for their life?

NRSV MAR 08:38 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

NRSV MAR 09:01 "Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with power."

NRSV MAR 09:12 "Elijah is indeed coming first to restore all things. How then is it written about the Son of Man, that he is to go through many sufferings and be treated with contempt?

NRSV MAR 09:13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written about him."

NRSV MAR 09:16 "What are you arguing about with them?"

NRSV MAR 09:19 "You faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me."

NRSV MAR 09:21 "How long has this been happening to him?"

NRSV MAR 09:23 "If you are able! - All things can be done for the one who believes."

NRSV MAR 09:25 "You spirit that keep this boy from speaking and hearing, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!"

NRSV MAR 09:29 "This kind can come out only through prayer."

NRSV MAR 09:31 "The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again."

NRSV MAR 09:33 "What were you arguing about on the way?"

NRSV MAR 09:35 "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all."

NRSV MAR 09:37 "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

NRSV MAR 09:39 "Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterwards to speak evil of me.

NRSV MAR 09:40 Whoever is not against us is for us.

NRSV MAR 09:41 For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.

NRSV MAR 09:42 "If any of you put a stumbling-block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea.

NRSV MAR 09:43 If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire.

NRSV MAR 09:44 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Verses 44 and 46 (which are identical with verse 48) are lacking in the best ancient authorities.

NRSV MAR 09:45 And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell.

NRSV MAR 09:46 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Verses 44 and 46 (which are identical with verse 48) are lacking in the best ancient authorities.

NRSV MAR 09:47 And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown into hell,

NRSV MAR 09:48 where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.

NRSV MAR 09:49 "For everyone will be salted with fire.

NRSV MAR 09:50 Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another."

NRSV MAR 10:03 "What did Moses command you?"

NRSV MAR 10:05 "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you.

NRSV MAR 10:06 But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.'

NRSV MAR 10:07 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife,

NRSV MAR 10:08 and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

NRSV MAR 10:09 Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

NRSV MAR 10:11 "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her;

NRSV MAR 10:12 and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

NRSV MAR 10:14 "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.

NRSV MAR 10:15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it."

NRSV MAR 10:18 "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.

NRSV MAR 10:19 You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honour your father and mother.'"

NRSV MAR 10:21 "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."

NRSV MAR 10:23 "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!"

NRSV MAR 10:24 "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

NRSV MAR 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

NRSV MAR 10:27 "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible."

NRSV MAR 10:29 "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news,

NRSV MAR 10:30 who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age - houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions - and in the age to come eternal life.

NRSV MAR 10:31 But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first."

NRSV MAR 10:33 "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death; then they will hand him over to the Gentiles;

NRSV MAR 10:34 they will mock him, and spit upon him, and flog him, and kill him; and after three days he will rise again."

NRSV MAR 10:36 "What is it you want me to do for you?"

NRSV MAR 10:38 "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?"

NRSV MAR 10:39 "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized;

NRSV MAR 10:40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

NRSV MAR 10:42 "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them.

NRSV MAR 10:43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant,

NRSV MAR 10:44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all.

NRSV MAR 10:45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."

NRSV MAR 10:49 "Call him here."

NRSV MAR 10:51 "What do you want me to do for you?"

NRSV MAR 10:52 "Go; your faith has made you well."

NRSV MAR 11:02 "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it.

NRSV MAR 11:03 If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'"

NRSV MAR 11:14 "May no one ever eat fruit from you again."

NRSV MAR 11:17 "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations?' But you have made it a den of robbers."

NRSV MAR 11:22 "Have faith in God.

NRSV MAR 11:23 Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you.

NRSV MAR 11:24 So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

NRSV MAR 11:25 "Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses."

NRSV MAR 11:26 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities add verse 26, 'But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.'

NRSV MAR 11:29 "I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

NRSV MAR 11:30 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? Answer me."

NRSV MAR 11:33 "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

NRSV MAR 12:01 "A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watch-tower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country.

NRSV MAR 12:02 When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard.

NRSV MAR 12:03 But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.

NRSV MAR 12:04 And again he sent another slave to them; this one they beat over the head and insulted.

NRSV MAR 12:05 Then he sent another, and that one they killed. And so it was with many others; some they beat, and others they killed.

NRSV MAR 12:06 He had still one other, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

NRSV MAR 12:07 But those tenants said to one another, 'This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.'

NRSV MAR 12:08 So they seized him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

NRSV MAR 12:09 What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others.

NRSV MAR 12:10 Have you not read this scripture: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone;

NRSV MAR 12:11 this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes?'"

NRSV MAR 12:15 "Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it."

NRSV MAR 12:16 "Whose head is this, and whose title?"

NRSV MAR 12:17 "Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."

NRSV MAR 12:24 "Is not this the reason you are wrong, that you know neither the scriptures nor the power of God?

NRSV MAR 12:25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

NRSV MAR 12:26 And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the story about the bush, how God said to him, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?'

NRSV MAR 12:27 He is God not of the dead, but of the living; you are quite wrong."

NRSV MAR 12:29 "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one;

NRSV MAR 12:30 you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.'

NRSV MAR 12:31 The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these."

NRSV MAR 12:34 "You are not far from the kingdom of God."

NRSV MAR 12:35 "How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?

NRSV MAR 12:36 David himself, by the Holy Spirit, declared, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet."'

NRSV MAR 12:37 David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?"

NRSV MAR 12:38 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and to be greeted with respect in the market-places,

NRSV MAR 12:39 and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets!

NRSV MAR 12:40 They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

NRSV MAR 12:43 "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury.

NRSV MAR 12:44 For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

NRSV MAR 13:02 "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down."

NRSV MAR 13:05 "Beware that no one leads you astray.

NRSV MAR 13:06 Many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray.

NRSV MAR 13:07 When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come.

NRSV MAR 13:08 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

NRSV MAR 13:09 "As for yourselves, beware; for they will hand you over to councils; and you will be beaten in synagogues; and you will stand before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them.

NRSV MAR 13:10 And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations.

NRSV MAR 13:11 When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given you at that time, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

NRSV MAR 13:12 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;

NRSV MAR 13:13 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.

NRSV MAR 13:14 "But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be, . . . then those in Judea must flee to the mountains;

NRSV MAR 13:15 someone on the housetop must not go down or enter the house to take anything away;

NRSV MAR 13:16 someone in the field must not turn back to get a coat.

NRSV MAR 13:17 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days!

NRSV MAR 13:18 Pray that it may not be in winter.

NRSV MAR 13:19 For in those days there will be suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, no, and never will be.

NRSV MAR 13:20 And if the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he has cut short those days.

NRSV MAR 13:21 And if anyone says to you at that time, 'Look! Here is the Messiah!' or 'Look! There he is!' - do not believe it.

NRSV MAR 13:22 False messiahs and false prophets will appear and produce signs and omens, to lead astray, if possible, the elect.

NRSV MAR 13:23 But be alert; I have already told you everything.

NRSV MAR 13:24 "But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light,

NRSV MAR 13:25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.

NRSV MAR 13:26 Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in clouds" with great power and glory.

NRSV MAR 13:27 Then he will send out the angels, and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

NRSV MAR 13:28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near.

NRSV MAR 13:29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates.

NRSV MAR 13:30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

NRSV MAR 13:31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

NRSV MAR 13:32 "But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

NRSV MAR 13:33 Beware, keep alert; for you do not know when the time will come.

NRSV MAR 13:34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his slaves in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to be on the watch.

NRSV MAR 13:35 Therefore, keep awake - for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or at cockcrow, or at dawn,

NRSV MAR 13:36 or else he may find you asleep when he comes suddenly.

NRSV MAR 13:37 And what I say to you I say to all: Keep awake."

NRSV MAR 14:06 "Let her alone; why do you trouble her? She has performed a good service for me.

NRSV MAR 14:07 For you always have the poor with you, and you can show kindness to them whenever you wish; but you will not always have me.

NRSV MAR 14:08 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.

NRSV MAR 14:09 Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her."

NRSV MAR 14:13 "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him,

NRSV MAR 14:14 and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?'

NRSV MAR 14:15 He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there."

NRSV MAR 14:18 "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me."

NRSV MAR 14:20 "It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me.

NRSV MAR 14:21 For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that one by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that one not to have been born."

NRSV MAR 14:22 "Take; this is my body."

NRSV MAR 14:24 "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.

NRSV MAR 14:25 Truly I tell you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."

NRSV MAR 14:27 "You will all become deserters; for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.'

NRSV MAR 14:28 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee."

NRSV MAR 14:30 "Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."

NRSV MAR 14:32 "Sit here while I pray."

NRSV MAR 14:34 "I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and keep awake."

NRSV MAR 14:36 "Abba, Father, for you all things are possible; remove this cup from me; yet, not what I want, but what you want."

NRSV MAR 14:37 "Simon, are you asleep? Could you not keep awake one hour?

NRSV MAR 14:38 Keep awake and pray that you may not come into the time of trial; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

NRSV MAR 14:41 "Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough! The hour has come; the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

NRSV MAR 14:42 Get up, let us be going. See, my betrayer is at hand."

NRSV MAR 14:48 "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a bandit?

NRSV MAR 14:49 Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. But let the scriptures be fulfilled."

NRSV MAR 14:62 "I am; and 'you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power,' and "coming with the clouds of heaven.'"

NRSV MAR 14:72 "Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times."

NRSV MAR 15:02 "You say so."

NRSV MAR 15:34 "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" . . . "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

NRSV MAR 16:15 "Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.

NRSV MAR 16:16 The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; but the one who does not believe will be condemned.

NRSV MAR 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: by using my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;

NRSV MAR 16:18 they will pick up snakes in their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover."

NRSV LUK 02:49 "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"

NRSV LUK 04:04 "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"

NRSV LUK 04:08 "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'"

NRSV LUK 04:12 "It is said, 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

NRSV LUK 04:18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,

NRSV LUK 04:19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour."

NRSV LUK 04:21 "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."

NRSV LUK 04:23 "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your home town the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.'"

NRSV LUK 04:24 "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown.

NRSV LUK 04:25 But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land;

NRSV LUK 04:26 yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in Sidon.

NRSV LUK 04:27 There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."

NRSV LUK 04:35 "Be silent, and come out of him!"

NRSV LUK 04:43 "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other cities also; for I was sent for this purpose."

NRSV LUK 05:04 "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch."

NRSV LUK 05:10 "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people."

NRSV LUK 05:13 "I do choose. Be made clean."

NRSV LUK 05:14 "Go," . . . "and show yourself to the priest, and, as Moses commanded, make an offering for your cleansing, for a testimony to them."

NRSV LUK 05:20 "Friend, your sins are forgiven you."

NRSV LUK 05:22 "Why do you raise such questions in your hearts?

NRSV LUK 05:23 Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Stand up and walk?'

NRSV LUK 05:24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" . . . "I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home."

NRSV LUK 05:27 "Follow me."

NRSV LUK 05:31 "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick;

NRSV LUK 05:32 I have come to call not the righteous but sinners to repentance."

NRSV LUK 05:34 "You cannot make wedding-guests fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?

NRSV LUK 05:35 The days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days."

NRSV LUK 05:36 "No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the piece from the new will not match the old.

NRSV LUK 05:37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed.

NRSV LUK 05:38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.

NRSV LUK 05:39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new wine, but says, 'The old is good.'"

NRSV LUK 06:03 "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

NRSV LUK 06:04 He entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave some to his companions?"

NRSV LUK 06:05 "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

NRSV LUK 06:08 "Come and stand here."

NRSV LUK 06:09 "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?"

NRSV LUK 06:10 "Stretch out your hand."

NRSV LUK 06:20 "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

NRSV LUK 06:21 "Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. "Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

NRSV LUK 06:22 "Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man.

NRSV LUK 06:23 Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets.

NRSV LUK 06:24 "But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.

NRSV LUK 06:25 "Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.

NRSV LUK 06:26 "Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.

NRSV LUK 06:27 "But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

NRSV LUK 06:28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

NRSV LUK 06:29 If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt.

NRSV LUK 06:30 Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again.

NRSV LUK 06:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

NRSV LUK 06:32 "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them.

NRSV LUK 06:33 If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.

NRSV LUK 06:34 If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

NRSV LUK 06:35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.

NRSV LUK 06:36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

NRSV LUK 06:37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven;

NRSV LUK 06:38 give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."

NRSV LUK 06:39 "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?

NRSV LUK 06:40 A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher.

NRSV LUK 06:41 Why do you see the speck in your neighbour's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?

NRSV LUK 06:42 Or how can you say to your neighbour, 'Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbour's eye.

NRSV LUK 06:43 "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit;

NRSV LUK 06:44 for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

NRSV LUK 06:45 The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

NRSV LUK 06:46 "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I tell you?

NRSV LUK 06:47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them.

NRSV LUK 06:48 That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.

NRSV LUK 06:49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house."

NRSV LUK 07:09 "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith."

NRSV LUK 07:13 "Do not weep."

NRSV LUK 07:14 "Young man, I say to you, rise!"

NRSV LUK 07:22 "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them.

NRSV LUK 07:23 And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me."

NRSV LUK 07:24 "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind?

NRSV LUK 07:25 What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who put on fine clothing and live in luxury are in royal palaces.

NRSV LUK 07:26 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

NRSV LUK 07:27 This is the one about whom it is written, 'See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

NRSV LUK 07:28 I tell you, among those born of women no one is greater than John; yet the least in the kingdom of God is greater than he."

NRSV LUK 07:31 "To what then will I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like?

NRSV LUK 07:32 They are like children sitting in the market-place and calling to one another, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not weep.'

NRSV LUK 07:33 For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, 'He has a demon;'

NRSV LUK 07:34 the Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

NRSV LUK 07:35 Nevertheless, wisdom is vindicated by all her children."

NRSV LUK 07:40 "Simon, I have something to say to you."

NRSV LUK 07:41 "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.

NRSV LUK 07:42 When they could not pay, he cancelled the debts for both of them. Now which of them will love him more?"

NRSV LUK 07:43 "You have judged rightly."

NRSV LUK 07:44 "Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has bathed my feet with her tears and dried them with her hair.

NRSV LUK 07:45 You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not stopped kissing my feet.

NRSV LUK 07:46 You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment.

NRSV LUK 07:47 Therefore, I tell you, her sins, which were many, have been forgiven; hence she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little."

NRSV LUK 07:48 "Your sins are forgiven."

NRSV LUK 07:50 "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

NRSV LUK 08:05 "A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell on the path and was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

NRSV LUK 08:06 Some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered for lack of moisture.

NRSV LUK 08:07 Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew with it and choked it.

NRSV LUK 08:08 Some fell into good soil, and when it grew, it produced a hundredfold." . . . "Let anyone with ears to hear listen!"

NRSV LUK 08:10 "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but to others I speak in parables, so that 'looking they may not perceive, and listening they may not understand.'

NRSV LUK 08:11 "Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

NRSV LUK 08:12 The ones on the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved.

NRSV LUK 08:13 The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe only for a while and in a time of testing fall away.

NRSV LUK 08:14 As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear; but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

NRSV LUK 08:15 But as for that in the good soil, these are the ones who, when they hear the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patient endurance.

NRSV LUK 08:16 "No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light.

NRSV LUK 08:17 For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light.

NRSV LUK 08:18 Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away."

NRSV LUK 08:21 "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."

NRSV LUK 08:22 "Let us go across to the other side of the lake."

NRSV LUK 08:25 "Where is your faith?"

NRSV LUK 08:30 "What is your name?"

NRSV LUK 08:39 "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you."

NRSV LUK 08:45 "Who touched me?"

NRSV LUK 08:46 "Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me."

NRSV LUK 08:48 "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace."

NRSV LUK 08:50 "Do not fear. Only believe, and she will be saved."

NRSV LUK 08:52 "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping."

NRSV LUK 08:54 "Child, get up!"

NRSV LUK 09:03 "Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor money - not even an extra tunic.

NRSV LUK 09:04 Whatever house you enter, stay there, and leave from there.

NRSV LUK 09:05 Wherever they do not welcome you, as you are leaving that town shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."

NRSV LUK 09:13 "You give them something to eat."

NRSV LUK 09:14 "Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each."

NRSV LUK 09:18 "Who do the crowds say that I am?"

NRSV LUK 09:20 "But who do you say that I am?"

NRSV LUK 09:22 "The Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised."

NRSV LUK 09:23 "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.

NRSV LUK 09:24 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.

NRSV LUK 09:25 What does it profit them if they gain the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves?

NRSV LUK 09:26 Those who are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.

NRSV LUK 09:27 But truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God."

NRSV LUK 09:41 "You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here."

NRSV LUK 09:44 "Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands."

NRSV LUK 09:48 "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest."

NRSV LUK 09:50 "Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you."

NRSV LUK 09:55 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities read: rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what spirit you are of,

NRSV LUK 09:56 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities read: for the Son of Man has not come to destroy the lives of human beings but to save them."

NRSV LUK 09:58 "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."

NRSV LUK 09:59 "Follow me."

NRSV LUK 09:60 "Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

NRSV LUK 09:62 "No one who puts a hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."

NRSV LUK 10:02 "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.

NRSV LUK 10:03 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.

NRSV LUK 10:04 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road.

NRSV LUK 10:05 Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!'

NRSV LUK 10:06 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.

NRSV LUK 10:07 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the labourer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.

NRSV LUK 10:08 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you;

NRSV LUK 10:09 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

NRSV LUK 10:10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say,

NRSV LUK 10:11 'Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.'

NRSV LUK 10:12 I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

NRSV LUK 10:13 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

NRSV LUK 10:14 But at the judgement it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

NRSV LUK 10:15 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades.

NRSV LUK 10:16 "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

NRSV LUK 10:18 "I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning.

NRSV LUK 10:19 See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.

NRSV LUK 10:20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven."

NRSV LUK 10:21 "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.

NRSV LUK 10:22 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

NRSV LUK 10:23 "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!

NRSV LUK 10:24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it."

NRSV LUK 10:26 "What is written in the law? What do you read there?"

NRSV LUK 10:28 "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live."

NRSV LUK 10:30 "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.

NRSV LUK 10:31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

NRSV LUK 10:32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

NRSV LUK 10:33 But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.

NRSV LUK 10:34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

NRSV LUK 10:35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.'

NRSV LUK 10:36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?"

NRSV LUK 10:37 "Go and do likewise."

NRSV LUK 10:41 "Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things;

NRSV LUK 10:42 there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her."

NRSV LUK 11:02 "When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.

NRSV LUK 11:03 Give us each day our daily bread.

NRSV LUK 11:04 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial."

NRSV LUK 11:05 "Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, 'Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;

NRSV LUK 11:06 for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him.'

NRSV LUK 11:07 And he answers from within, 'Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.'

NRSV LUK 11:08 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

NRSV LUK 11:09 "So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.

NRSV LUK 11:10 For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

NRSV LUK 11:11 Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish?

NRSV LUK 11:12 Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion?

NRSV LUK 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

NRSV LUK 11:17 "Every kingdom divided against itself becomes a desert, and house falls on house.

NRSV LUK 11:18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? - for you say that I cast out the demons by Beelzebul.

NRSV LUK 11:19 Now if I cast out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.

NRSV LUK 11:20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out the demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you.

NRSV LUK 11:21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his castle, his property is safe.

NRSV LUK 11:22 But when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away his armour in which he trusted and divides his plunder.

NRSV LUK 11:23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

NRSV LUK 11:24 "When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it wanders through waterless regions looking for a resting-place, but not finding any, it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.'

NRSV LUK 11:25 When it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.

NRSV LUK 11:26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first."

NRSV LUK 11:28 "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!"

NRSV LUK 11:29 "This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

NRSV LUK 11:30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation.

NRSV LUK 11:31 The queen of the South will rise at the judgement with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here!

NRSV LUK 11:32 The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!

NRSV LUK 11:33 "No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar, but on the lampstand so that those who enter may see the light.

NRSV LUK 11:34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. If your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light; but if it is not healthy, your body is full of darkness.

NRSV LUK 11:35 Therefore consider whether the light in you is not darkness.

NRSV LUK 11:36 If then your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be as full of light as when a lamp gives you light with its rays."

NRSV LUK 11:39 "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.

NRSV LUK 11:40 You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?

NRSV LUK 11:41 So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you.

NRSV LUK 11:42 "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practised, without neglecting the others.

NRSV LUK 11:43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love to have the seat of honour in the synagogues and to be greeted with respect in the market-places.

NRSV LUK 11:44 Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without realizing it."

NRSV LUK 11:46 "Woe also to you lawyers! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not lift a finger to ease them.

NRSV LUK 11:47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors killed.

NRSV LUK 11:48 So you are witnesses and approve of the deeds of your ancestors; for they killed them, and you build their tombs.

NRSV LUK 11:49 Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,'

NRSV LUK 11:50 so that this generation may be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world,

NRSV LUK 11:51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be charged against this generation.

NRSV LUK 11:52 Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering."

NRSV LUK 12:01 "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, that is, their hypocrisy.

NRSV LUK 12:02 Nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.

NRSV LUK 12:03 Therefore whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the housetops.

NRSV LUK 12:04 "I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.

NRSV LUK 12:05 But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

NRSV LUK 12:06 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God's sight.

NRSV LUK 12:07 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.

NRSV LUK 12:08 "And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God;

NRSV LUK 12:09 but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.

NRSV LUK 12:10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

NRSV LUK 12:11 When they bring you before the synagogues, the rulers, and the authorities, do not worry about how you are to defend yourselves or what you are to say;

NRSV LUK 12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what you ought to say."

NRSV LUK 12:14 "Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?"

NRSV LUK 12:15 "Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one's life does not consist in the abundance of possessions."

NRSV LUK 12:16 "The land of a rich man produced abundantly.

NRSV LUK 12:17 And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?'

NRSV LUK 12:18 Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

NRSV LUK 12:19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.'

NRSV LUK 12:20 But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?'

NRSV LUK 12:21 So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God."

NRSV LUK 12:22 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear.

NRSV LUK 12:23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

NRSV LUK 12:24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!

NRSV LUK 12:25 And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?

NRSV LUK 12:26 If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest?

NRSV LUK 12:27 Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.

NRSV LUK 12:28 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you - you of little faith!

NRSV LUK 12:29 And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying.

NRSV LUK 12:30 For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them.

NRSV LUK 12:31 Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

NRSV LUK 12:32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

NRSV LUK 12:33 Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

NRSV LUK 12:34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

NRSV LUK 12:35 "Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit;

NRSV LUK 12:36 be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks.

NRSV LUK 12:37 Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them.

NRSV LUK 12:38 If he comes during the middle of the night, or near dawn, and finds them so, blessed are those slaves.

NRSV LUK 12:39 "But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

NRSV LUK 12:40 You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour."

NRSV LUK 12:42 "Who then is the faithful and prudent manager whom his master will put in charge of his slaves, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time?

NRSV LUK 12:43 Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives.

NRSV LUK 12:44 Truly I tell you, he will put that one in charge of all his possessions.

NRSV LUK 12:45 But if that slave says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and if he begins to beat the other slaves, men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk,

NRSV LUK 12:46 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour that he does not know, and will cut him in pieces, and put him with the unfaithful.

NRSV LUK 12:47 That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating.

NRSV LUK 12:48 But one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.

NRSV LUK 12:49 "I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

NRSV LUK 12:50 I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed!

NRSV LUK 12:51 Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division!

NRSV LUK 12:52 From now on, five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three;

NRSV LUK 12:53 they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

NRSV LUK 12:54 "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, 'It is going to rain;' and so it happens.

NRSV LUK 12:55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat;' and it happens.

NRSV LUK 12:56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

NRSV LUK 12:57 "And why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?

NRSV LUK 12:58 Thus, when you go with your accuser before a magistrate, on the way make an effort to settle the case, or you may be dragged before the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you in prison.

NRSV LUK 12:59 I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the very last penny."

NRSV LUK 13:02 "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans?

NRSV LUK 13:03 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.

NRSV LUK 13:04 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them - do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem?

NRSV LUK 13:05 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did."

NRSV LUK 13:06 "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none.

NRSV LUK 13:07 So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?'

NRSV LUK 13:08 He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig round it and put manure on it.

NRSV LUK 13:09 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.'"

NRSV LUK 13:12 "Woman, you are set free from your ailment."

NRSV LUK 13:15 "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the manger, and lead it away to give it water?

NRSV LUK 13:16 And ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham whom Satan bound for eighteen long years, be set free from this bondage on the sabbath day?"

NRSV LUK 13:18 "What is the kingdom of God like? And to what should I compare it?

NRSV LUK 13:19 It is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in the garden; it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air made nests in its branches."

NRSV LUK 13:20 "To what should I compare the kingdom of God?

NRSV LUK 13:21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened."

NRSV LUK 13:24 "Strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

NRSV LUK 13:25 When once the owner of the house has got up and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, 'Lord, open to us,' then in reply he will say to you, 'I do not know where you come from.'

NRSV LUK 13:26 Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'

NRSV LUK 13:27 But he will say, 'I do not know where you come from; go away from me, all you evildoers!'

NRSV LUK 13:28 There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrown out.

NRSV LUK 13:29 Then people will come from east and west, from north and south, and will eat in the kingdom of God.

NRSV LUK 13:30 Indeed, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

NRSV LUK 13:32 "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work.

NRSV LUK 13:33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed away from Jerusalem.'

NRSV LUK 13:34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!

NRSV LUK 13:35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

NRSV LUK 14:03 '"Is it lawful to cure people on the sabbath, or not?"

NRSV LUK 14:05 "If one of you has a child or an ox that has fallen into a well, will you not immediately pull it out on a sabbath day?"

NRSV LUK 14:08 "When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet, do not sit down at the place of honour, in case someone more distinguished than you has been invited by your host;

NRSV LUK 14:09 and the host who invited both of you may come and say to you, 'Give this person your place,' and then in disgrace you would start to take the lowest place.

NRSV LUK 14:10 But when you are invited, go and sit down at the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he may say to you, 'Friend, move up higher;' then you will be honoured in the presence of all who sit at the table with you.

NRSV LUK 14:11 For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

NRSV LUK 14:12 "When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbours, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid.

NRSV LUK 14:13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind.

NRSV LUK 14:14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

NRSV LUK 14:16 "Someone gave a great dinner and invited many.

NRSV LUK 14:17 At the time for the dinner he sent his slave to say to those who had been invited, 'Come; for everything is ready now.'

NRSV LUK 14:18 But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, 'I have bought a piece of land, and I must go out and see it; please accept my apologies.'

NRSV LUK 14:19 Another said, 'I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; please accept my apologies.'

NRSV LUK 14:20 Another said, 'I have just been married, and therefore I cannot come.'

NRSV LUK 14:21 So the slave returned and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and said to his slave, 'Go out at once into the streets and lanes of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame.'

NRSV LUK 14:22 And the slave said, 'Sir, what you ordered has been done, and there is still room.'

NRSV LUK 14:23 Then the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the roads and lanes, and compel people to come in, so that my house may be filled.

NRSV LUK 14:24 For I tell you, none of those who were invited will taste my dinner.'"

NRSV LUK 14:26 "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.

NRSV LUK 14:27 Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

NRSV LUK 14:28 For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it?

NRSV LUK 14:29 Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him,

NRSV LUK 14:30 saying, 'This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.'

NRSV LUK 14:31 Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand?

NRSV LUK 14:32 If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace.

NRSV LUK 14:33 So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.

NRSV LUK 14:34 "Salt is good; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored?

NRSV LUK 14:35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure heap; they throw it away. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!"

NRSV LUK 15:04 "Which one of you, having a hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it?

NRSV LUK 15:05 When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices.

NRSV LUK 15:06 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbours, saying to them, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.'

NRSV LUK 15:07 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.

NRSV LUK 15:08 "Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it?

NRSV LUK 15:09 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbours, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.'

NRSV LUK 15:10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

NRSV LUK 15:11 "There was a man who had two sons.

NRSV LUK 15:12 The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that will belong to me.' So he divided his property between them.

NRSV LUK 15:13 A few days later the younger son gathered all he had and travelled to a distant country, and there he squandered his property in dissolute living.

NRSV LUK 15:14 When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and he began to be in need.

NRSV LUK 15:15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs.

NRSV LUK 15:16 He would gladly have filled himself with the pods that the pigs were eating; and no one gave him anything.

NRSV LUK 15:17 But when he came to himself he said, 'How many of my father's hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger!

NRSV LUK 15:18 I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, "Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you;

NRSV LUK 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands."'

NRSV LUK 15:20 So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion; he ran and put his arms around him and kissed him.

NRSV LUK 15:21 Then the son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

NRSV LUK 15:22 But the father said to his slaves, 'Quickly, bring out a robe - the best one - and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

NRSV LUK 15:23 And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate;

NRSV LUK 15:24 for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!' And they began to celebrate.

NRSV LUK 15:25 "Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came and approached the house, he heard music and dancing.

NRSV LUK 15:26 He called one of the slaves and asked what was going on.

NRSV LUK 15:27 He replied, 'Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got him back safe and sound.'

NRSV LUK 15:28 Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him.

NRSV LUK 15:29 But he answered his father, 'Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends.

NRSV LUK 15:30 But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!'

NRSV LUK 15:31 Then the father said to him, 'Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.

NRSV LUK 15:32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found.'"

NRSV LUK 16:01 "There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property.

NRSV LUK 16:02 So he summoned him and said to him, 'What is this that I hear about you? Give me an account of your management, because you cannot be my manager any longer.'

NRSV LUK 16:03 Then the manager said to himself, 'What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg.

NRSV LUK 16:04 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.'

NRSV LUK 16:05 So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'

NRSV LUK 16:06 He answered, 'A hundred jugs of olive oil.' He said to him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.'

NRSV LUK 16:07 Then he asked another, 'And how much do you owe?' He replied, 'A hundred containers of wheat.' He said to him, 'Take your bill and make it eighty.'

NRSV LUK 16:08 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.

NRSV LUK 16:09 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it is gone, they may welcome you into the eternal homes.

NRSV LUK 16:10 "Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.

NRSV LUK 16:11 If then you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?

NRSV LUK 16:12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own?

NRSV LUK 16:13 No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.'

NRSV LUK 16:15 "You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others; but God knows your hearts; for what is prized by human beings is an abomination in the sight of God.

NRSV LUK 16:16 "The law and the prophets were in effect until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force.

NRSV LUK 16:17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away, than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.

NRSV LUK 16:18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.

NRSV LUK 16:19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.

NRSV LUK 16:20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,

NRSV LUK 16:21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man's table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores.

NRSV LUK 16:22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried.

NRSV LUK 16:23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.

NRSV LUK 16:24 He called out, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.'

NRSV LUK 16:25 But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.

NRSV LUK 16:26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.'

NRSV LUK 16:27 He said, 'Then, father, I beg you to send him to my father's house -

NRSV LUK 16:28 for I have five brothers - that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.'

NRSV LUK 16:29 Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.'

NRSV LUK 16:30 He said, 'No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'

NRSV LUK 16:31 He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

NRSV LUK 17:01 "Occasions for stumbling are bound to come, but woe to anyone by whom they come!

NRSV LUK 17:02 It would be better for you if a millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea than for you to cause one of these little ones to stumble.

NRSV LUK 17:03 Be on your guard! If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive.

NRSV LUK 17:04 And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, 'I repent,' you must forgive."

NRSV LUK 17:06 "If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it would obey you.

NRSV LUK 17:07 "Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from ploughing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here at once and take your place at the table?'

NRSV LUK 17:08 Would you not rather say to him, 'Prepare supper for me, put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink?'

NRSV LUK 17:09 Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded?

NRSV LUK 17:10 So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, 'We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!'"

NRSV LUK 17:14 "Go and show yourselves to the priests."

NRSV LUK 17:17 "Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they?

NRSV LUK 17:18 Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?"

NRSV LUK 17:19 "Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well."

NRSV LUK 17:20 "The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed;

NRSV LUK 17:21 nor will they say, 'Look, here it is!' or 'There it is!' For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you."

NRSV LUK 17:22 "The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.

NRSV LUK 17:23 They will say to you, 'Look there!' or 'Look here!' Do not go, do not set off in pursuit.

NRSV LUK 17:24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day.

NRSV LUK 17:25 But first he must endure much suffering and be rejected by this generation.

NRSV LUK 17:26 Just as it was in the days of Noah, so too it will be in the days of the Son of Man.

NRSV LUK 17:27 They were eating and drinking, and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed all of them.

NRSV LUK 17:28 Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building,

NRSV LUK 17:29 but on the day that Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed all of them

NRSV LUK 17:30 - it will be like that on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.

NRSV LUK 17:31 On that day, anyone on the housetop who has belongings in the house must not come down to take them away; and likewise anyone in the field must not turn back.

NRSV LUK 17:32 Remember Lot's wife.

NRSV LUK 17:33 Those who try to make their life secure will lose it, but those who lose their life will keep it.

NRSV LUK 17:34 I tell you, on that night there will be two in one bed; one will be taken and the other left.

NRSV LUK 17:35 There will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken and the other left."

NRSV LUK 17:36 NO QUOTE GIVEN: Other ancient authorities add verse LUK 17:36, "Two will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left."

NRSV LUK 17:37 "Where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather."

NRSV LUK 18:02 "In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor had respect for people.

NRSV LUK 18:03 In that city there was a widow who kept coming to him and saying, 'Grant me justice against my opponent.'

NRSV LUK 18:04 For a while he refused; but later he said to himself, 'Though I have no fear of God and no respect for anyone,

NRSV LUK 18:05 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out by continually coming.'"

NRSV LUK 18:06 "Listen to what the unjust judge says.

NRSV LUK 18:07 And will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them?

NRSV LUK 18:08 I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

NRSV LUK 18:10 "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.

NRSV LUK 18:11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.

NRSV LUK 18:12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.'

NRSV LUK 18:13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'

NRSV LUK 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted."

NRSV LUK 18:16 "Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.

NRSV LUK 18:17 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it."

NRSV LUK 18:19 "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.

NRSV LUK 18:20 You know the commandments: 'You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; Honour your father and mother.'"

NRSV LUK 18:22 "There is still one thing lacking. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."

NRSV LUK 18:24 "How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!

NRSV LUK 18:25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God."

NRSV LUK 18:27 "What is impossible for mortals is possible for God."

NRSV LUK 18:29 "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God,

NRSV LUK 18:30 who will not get back very much more in this age, and in the age to come eternal life."

NRSV LUK 18:31 "See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.

NRSV LUK 18:32 For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon.

NRSV LUK 18:33 After they have flogged him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise again."

NRSV LUK 18:41 "What do you want me to do for you?"

NRSV LUK 18:42 "Receive your sight; your faith has saved you."

NRSV LUK 19:05 "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today."

NRSV LUK 19:09 "Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham.

NRSV LUK 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost."

NRSV LUK 19:12 "A nobleman went to a distant country to get royal power for himself and then return.

NRSV LUK 19:13 He summoned ten of his slaves, and gave them ten pounds, and said to them, 'Do business with these until I come back.'

NRSV LUK 19:14 But the citizens of his country hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to rule over us.'

NRSV LUK 19:15 When he returned, having received royal power, he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be summoned so that he might find out what they had gained by trading.

NRSV LUK 19:16 The first came forward and said, 'Lord, your pound has made ten more pounds.'

NRSV LUK 19:17 He said to him, 'Well done, good slave! Because you have been trustworthy in a very small thing, take charge of ten cities.'

NRSV LUK 19:18 Then the second came, saying, 'Lord, your pound has made five pounds.'

NRSV LUK 19:19 He said to him, 'And you, rule over five cities.'

NRSV LUK 19:20 Then the other came, saying, 'Lord, here is your pound. I wrapped it up in a piece of cloth,

NRSV LUK 19:21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man; you take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.'

NRSV LUK 19:22 He said to him, 'I will judge you by your own words, you wicked slave! You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?

NRSV LUK 19:23 Why then did you not put my money into the bank? Then when I returned, I could have collected it with interest.'

NRSV LUK 19:24 He said to the bystanders, 'Take the pound from him and give it to the one who has ten pounds.'

NRSV LUK 19:25 (And they said to him, 'Lord, he has ten pounds!')

NRSV LUK 19:26 'I tell you, to all those who have, more will be given; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.

NRSV LUK 19:27 But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them - bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.'"

NRSV LUK 19:30 "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here.

NRSV LUK 19:31 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this: 'The Lord needs it.'"

NRSV LUK 19:34 "The Lord needs it."

NRSV LUK 19:40 "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out."

NRSV LUK 19:42 "If you, even you, had only recognized on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.

NRSV LUK 19:43 Indeed, the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up ramparts around you and surround you, and hem you in on every side.

NRSV LUK 19:44 They will crush you to the ground, you and your children within you, and they will not leave within you one stone upon another; because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God."

NRSV LUK 19:46 "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer;' but you have made it a den of robbers."

NRSV LUK 20:03 "I will also ask you a question, and you tell me:

NRSV LUK 20:04 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?"

NRSV LUK 20:08 "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

NRSV LUK 20:09 "A man planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenants, and went to another country for a long time.

NRSV LUK 20:10 When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants in order that they might give him his share of the produce of the vineyard; but the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

NRSV LUK 20:11 Next he sent another slave; that one also they beat and insulted and sent away empty-handed.

NRSV LUK 20:12 And he sent yet a third; this one also they wounded and threw out.

NRSV LUK 20:13 Then the owner of the vineyard said, 'What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.'

NRSV LUK 20:14 But when the tenants saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, 'This is the heir; let us kill him so that the inheritance may be ours.'

NRSV LUK 20:15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

NRSV LUK 20:16 He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others."

NRSV LUK 20:17 "What then does this text mean: 'The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?'

NRSV LUK 20:18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls."

NRSV LUK 20:23 NO QUOTE GIVEN

NRSV LUK 20:24 "Show me a denarius. Whose head and whose title does it bear?"

NRSV LUK 20:25 "Then give to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."

NRSV LUK 20:34 "Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage;

NRSV LUK 20:35 but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.

NRSV LUK 20:36 Indeed they cannot die any more, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.

NRSV LUK 20:37 And the fact that the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

NRSV LUK 20:38 Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive."

NRSV LUK 20:41 "How can they say that the Messiah is David's son?

NRSV LUK 20:42 For David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand,

NRSV LUK 20:43 until I make your enemies your footstool."'

NRSV LUK 20:44 David thus calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?"

NRSV LUK 20:46 "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love to be greeted with respect in the market-places, and to have the best seats in the synagogues and places of honour at banquets.

NRSV LUK 20:47 They devour widows' houses and for the sake of appearance say long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation."

NRSV LUK 21:03 "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them;

NRSV LUK 21:04 for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on."

NRSV LUK 21:06 "As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down."

NRSV LUK 21:08 "Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, 'I am he!' and, 'The time is near!' Do not go after them.

NRSV LUK 21:09 "When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately."

NRSV LUK 21:10 "Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom;

NRSV LUK 21:11 there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.

NRSV LUK 21:12 "But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name.

NRSV LUK 21:13 This will give you an opportunity to testify.

NRSV LUK 21:14 So make up your minds not to prepare your defence in advance;

NRSV LUK 21:15 for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict.

NRSV LUK 21:16 You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death.

NRSV LUK 21:17 You will be hated by all because of my name.

NRSV LUK 21:18 But not a hair of your head will perish.

NRSV LUK 21:19 By your endurance you will gain your souls.

NRSV LUK 21:20 "When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near.

NRSV LUK 21:21 Then those in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those inside the city must leave it, and those out in the country must not enter it;

NRSV LUK 21:22 for these are days of vengeance, as a fulfilment of all that is written.

NRSV LUK 21:23 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! For there will be great distress on the earth and wrath against this people;

NRSV LUK 21:24 they will fall by the edge of the sword and be taken away as captives among all nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

NRSV LUK 21:25 "There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars, and on the earth distress among nations confused by the roaring of the sea and the waves.

NRSV LUK 21:26 People will faint from fear and foreboding of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

NRSV LUK 21:27 Then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in a cloud' with power and great glory.

NRSV LUK 21:28 Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

NRSV LUK 21:29 "Look at the fig tree and all the trees;

NRSV LUK 21:30 as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near.

NRSV LUK 21:31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

NRSV LUK 21:32 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place.

NRSV LUK 21:33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

NRSV LUK 21:34 "Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly,

NRSV LUK 21:35 like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth.

NRSV LUK 21:36 Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man."

NRSV LUK 22:08 "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us that we may eat it."

NRSV LUK 22:10 "Listen," . . . "when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house he enters

NRSV LUK 22:11 and say to the owner of the house, 'The teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'

NRSV LUK 22:12 He will show you a large room upstairs, already furnished. Make preparations for us there."

NRSV LUK 22:15 "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer;

NRSV LUK 22:16 for I tell you, I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."

NRSV LUK 22:17 "Take this and divide it among yourselves;

NRSV LUK 22:18 for I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."

NRSV LUK 22:19 "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."

NRSV LUK 22:20 "This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.

NRSV LUK 22:21 But see, the one who betrays me is with me, and his hand is on the table.

NRSV LUK 22:22 For the Son of Man is going as it has been determined, but woe to that one by whom he is betrayed!"

NRSV LUK 22:25 "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called benefactors.

NRSV LUK 22:26 But not so with you; rather the greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader like one who serves.

NRSV LUK 22:27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

NRSV LUK 22:28 "You are those who have stood by me in my trials;

NRSV LUK 22:29 and I confer on you, just as my Father has conferred on me, a kingdom,

NRSV LUK 22:30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

NRSV LUK 22:31 "Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to sift all of you like wheat,

NRSV LUK 22:32 but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned back, strengthen your brothers."

NRSV LUK 22:34 "I tell you, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, until you have denied three times that you know me."

NRSV LUK 22:35 "When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?"

NRSV LUK 22:36 "But now, the one who has a purse must take it, and likewise a bag. And the one who has no sword must sell his cloak and buy one.

NRSV LUK 22:37 For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me, 'And he was counted among the lawless;' and indeed what is written about me is being fulfilled."

NRSV LUK 22:38 "It is enough."

NRSV LUK 22:40 "Pray that you may not come into the time of trial."

NRSV LUK 22:42 "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me; yet, not my will but yours be done."

NRSV LUK 22:46 "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not come into the time of trial."

NRSV LUK 22:48 "Judas, is it with a kiss that you are betraying the Son of Man?"

NRSV LUK 22:51 "No more of this!"

NRSV LUK 22:52 "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit?

NRSV LUK 22:53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness!"

NRSV LUK 22:61 "Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times."

NRSV LUK 22:67 "If I tell you, you will not believe;

NRSV LUK 22:68 and if I question you, you will not answer.

NRSV LUK 22:69 But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

NRSV LUK 22:70 "You say that I am."

NRSV LUK 23:03 "You say so."

NRSV LUK 23:28 "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.

NRSV LUK 23:29 For the days are surely coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'

NRSV LUK 23:30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us;' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'

NRSV LUK 23:31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

NRSV LUK 23:34 ["Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing."]

NRSV LUK 23:43 "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

NRSV LUK 23:46 "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."

NRSV LUK 24:07 the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again."

NRSV LUK 24:17 "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?"

NRSV LUK 24:19 "What things?"

NRSV LUK 24:25 "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared!

NRSV LUK 24:26 Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?"

NRSV LUK 24:36 "Peace be with you."

NRSV LUK 24:38 "Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?

NRSV LUK 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."

NRSV LUK 24:41 "Have you anything here to eat?"

NRSV LUK 24:44 "These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you - that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled."

NRSV LUK 24:46 "Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day,

NRSV LUK 24:47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

NRSV LUK 24:48 You are witnesses of these things.

NRSV LUK 24:49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

The Gospel According to St. John (JOH)
(Goto Top)

NRSV JOH 01:38 "What are you looking for?"

NRSV JOH 01:39 "Come and see."

NRSV JOH 01:42 "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas."

NRSV JOH 01:43 "Follow me."

NRSV JOH 01:47 "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"

NRSV JOH 01:48 "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you."

NRSV JOH 01:50 "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these."

NRSV JOH 01:51 "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

NRSV JOH 02:04 "Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come."

NRSV JOH 02:07 "Fill the jars with water."

NRSV JOH 02:08 "Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward."

NRSV JOH 02:16 "Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father's house a market-place!"

NRSV JOH 02:19 "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."

NRSV JOH 03:03 "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."

NRSV JOH 03:05 "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.

NRSV JOH 03:06 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

NRSV JOH 03:07 Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.'

NRSV JOH 03:08 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

NRSV JOH 03:10 "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

NRSV JOH 03:11 "Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony.

NRSV JOH 03:12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

NRSV JOH 03:13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

NRSV JOH 03:14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,

NRSV JOH 03:15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

NRSV JOH 03:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

NRSV JOH 03:17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

NRSV JOH 03:18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

NRSV JOH 03:19 And this is the judgement, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.

NRSV JOH 03:20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed.

NRSV JOH 03:21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."

NRSV JOH 04:07 "Give me a drink."

NRSV JOH 04:10 "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

NRSV JOH 04:13 "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,

NRSV JOH 04:14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."

NRSV JOH 04:16 "Go, call your husband, and come back."

NRSV JOH 04:17 "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband;'

NRSV JOH 04:18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!"

NRSV JOH 04:21 "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

NRSV JOH 04:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.

NRSV JOH 04:23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.

NRSV JOH 04:24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."

NRSV JOH 04:26 "I am he, the one who is speaking to you."

NRSV JOH 04:32 "I have food to eat that you do not know about."

NRSV JOH 04:34 "My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.

NRSV JOH 04:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more, then comes the harvest?' But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.

NRSV JOH 04:36 The reaper is already receiving wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

NRSV JOH 04:37 For here the saying holds true, 'One sows and another reaps.'

NRSV JOH 04:38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labour. Others have laboured, and you have entered into their labour."

NRSV JOH 04:48 "Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe."

NRSV JOH 04:50 "Go; your son will live."

NRSV JOH 04:53 "Your son will live."

NRSV JOH 05:06 "Do you want to be made well?"

NRSV JOH 05:08 "Stand up, take your mat and walk."

NRSV JOH 05:11 'Take up your mat and walk.'"

NRSV JOH 05:12 'Take it up and walk?'"

NRSV JOH 05:14 "See, you have been made well! Do not sin any more, so that nothing worse happens to you."

NRSV JOH 05:17 "My Father is still working, and I also am working."

NRSV JOH 05:19 "Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise.

NRSV JOH 05:20 The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing; and he will show him greater works than these, so that you will be astonished.

NRSV JOH 05:21 Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomsoever he wishes.

NRSV JOH 05:22 The Father judges no one but has given all judgement to the Son,

NRSV JOH 05:23 so that all may honour the Son just as they honour the Father. Anyone who does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who sent him.

NRSV JOH 05:24 Very truly, I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and does not come under judgement, but has passed from death to life.

NRSV JOH 05:25 "Very truly, I tell you, the hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

NRSV JOH 05:26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;

NRSV JOH 05:27 and he has given him authority to execute judgement, because he is the Son of Man.

NRSV JOH 05:28 Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice

NRSV JOH 05:29 and will come out - those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

NRSV JOH 05:30 "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge; and my judgement is just, because I seek to do not my own will but the will of him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 05:31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.

NRSV JOH 05:32 There is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that his testimony to me is true.

NRSV JOH 05:33 You sent messengers to John, and he testified to the truth.

NRSV JOH 05:34 Not that I accept such human testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.

NRSV JOH 05:35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

NRSV JOH 05:36 But I have a testimony greater than John's. The works that the Father has given me to complete, the very works that I am doing, testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.

NRSV JOH 05:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen his form,

NRSV JOH 05:38 and you do not have his word abiding in you, because you do not believe him whom he has sent.

NRSV JOH 05:39 "You search the scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that testify on my behalf.

NRSV JOH 05:40 Yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

NRSV JOH 05:41 I do not accept glory from human beings.

NRSV JOH 05:42 But I know that you do not have the love of God in you.

NRSV JOH 05:43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; if another comes in his own name, you will accept him.

NRSV JOH 05:44 How can you believe when you accept glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the one who alone is God?

NRSV JOH 05:45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope.

NRSV JOH 05:46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.

NRSV JOH 05:47 But if you do not believe what he wrote, how will you believe what I say?"

NRSV JOH 06:05 "Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?"

NRSV JOH 06:10 "Make the people sit down."

NRSV JOH 06:12 "Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost."

NRSV JOH 06:20 "It is I; do not be afraid."

NRSV JOH 06:26 "Very truly, I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

NRSV JOH 06:27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For it is on him that God the Father has set his seal."

NRSV JOH 06:29 "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

NRSV JOH 06:32 "Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.

NRSV JOH 06:33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

NRSV JOH 06:35 "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

NRSV JOH 06:36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.

NRSV JOH 06:37 Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away;

NRSV JOH 06:38 for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 06:39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.

NRSV JOH 06:40 This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day."

NRSV JOH 06:41 "I am the bread that came down from heaven."

NRSV JOH 06:42 'I have come down from heaven?'"

NRSV JOH 06:43 "Do not complain among yourselves.

NRSV JOH 06:44 No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day.

NRSV JOH 06:45 It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me.

NRSV JOH 06:46 Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.

NRSV JOH 06:47 Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.

NRSV JOH 06:48 I am the bread of life.

NRSV JOH 06:49 Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

NRSV JOH 06:50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die.

NRSV JOH 06:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

NRSV JOH 06:53 "Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.

NRSV JOH 06:54 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day;

NRSV JOH 06:55 for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.

NRSV JOH 06:56 Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them.

NRSV JOH 06:57 Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me.

NRSV JOH 06:58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live for ever."

NRSV JOH 06:61 "Does this offend you?

NRSV JOH 06:62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before?

NRSV JOH 06:63 It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

NRSV JOH 06:64 But among you there are some who do not believe."

NRSV JOH 06:65 "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father."

NRSV JOH 06:67 "Do you also wish to go away?"

NRSV JOH 06:70 "Did I not choose you, the twelve? Yet one of you is a devil."

NRSV JOH 07:06 "My time has not yet come, but your time is always here.

NRSV JOH 07:07 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify against it that its works are evil.

NRSV JOH 07:08 Go to the festival yourselves. I am not going to this festival, for my time has not yet fully come."

NRSV JOH 07:16 "My teaching is not mine but his who sent me.

NRSV JOH 07:17 Anyone who resolves to do the will of God will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own.

NRSV JOH 07:18 Those who speak on their own seek their own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and there is nothing false in him.

NRSV JOH 07:19 "Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why are you looking for an opportunity to kill me?"

NRSV JOH 07:21 "I performed one work, and all of you are astonished.

NRSV JOH 07:22 Moses gave you circumcision (it is, of course, not from Moses, but from the patriarchs), and you circumcise a man on the sabbath.

NRSV JOH 07:23 If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath in order that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because I healed a man's whole body on the sabbath?

NRSV JOH 07:24 Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgement."

NRSV JOH 07:28 "You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him.

NRSV JOH 07:29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me."

NRSV JOH 07:33 "I will be with you a little while longer, and then I am going to him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 07:34 You will search for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come."

NRSV JOH 07:36 'You will search for me and you will not find me' . . . 'Where I am, you cannot come?'"

NRSV JOH 07:37 "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me,

NRSV JOH 07:38 and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, 'Out of the believer's heart shall flow rivers of living water.'"

NRSV JOH 08:07 "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."

NRSV JOH 08:10 "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"

NRSV JOH 08:11 "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."

NRSV JOH 08:12 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."

NRSV JOH 08:14 "Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going.

NRSV JOH 08:15 You judge by human standards; I judge no one.

NRSV JOH 08:16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgement is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.

NRSV JOH 08:17 In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid.

NRSV JOH 08:18 I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf."

NRSV JOH 08:19 "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

NRSV JOH 08:21 "I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come."

NRSV JOH 08:22 'Where I am going, you cannot come?'"

NRSV JOH 08:23 "You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world.

NRSV JOH 08:24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he."

NRSV JOH 08:25 "Why do I speak to you at all?

NRSV JOH 08:26 I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him."

NRSV JOH 08:28 "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the Father instructed me.

NRSV JOH 08:29 And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him."

NRSV JOH 08:31 "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples;

NRSV JOH 08:32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

NRSV JOH 08:33 'You will be made free?'"

NRSV JOH 08:34 "Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin.

NRSV JOH 08:35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there for ever.

NRSV JOH 08:36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

NRSV JOH 08:37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you look for an opportunity to kill me, because there is no place in you for my word.

NRSV JOH 08:38 I declare what I have seen in the Father's presence; as for you, you should do what you have heard from the Father."

NRSV JOH 08:39 "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing what Abraham did,

NRSV JOH 08:40 but now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. This is not what Abraham did.

NRSV JOH 08:41 You are indeed doing what your father does."

NRSV JOH 08:42 "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now I am here. I did not come on my own, but he sent me.

NRSV JOH 08:43 Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot accept my word.

NRSV JOH 08:44 You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

NRSV JOH 08:45 But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me.

NRSV JOH 08:46 Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

NRSV JOH 08:47 Whoever is from God hears the words of God. The reason you do not hear them is that you are not from God."

NRSV JOH 08:49 "I do not have a demon; but I honour my Father, and you dishonour me.

NRSV JOH 08:50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the judge.

NRSV JOH 08:51 Very truly, I tell you, whoever keeps my word will never see death."

NRSV JOH 08:52 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.'

NRSV JOH 08:54 "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, he of whom you say, 'He is our God,'

NRSV JOH 08:55 though you do not know him. But I know him; if I were to say that I do not know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him and I keep his word.

NRSV JOH 08:56 Your ancestor Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day; he saw it and was glad."

NRSV JOH 08:58 "Very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was, I am."

NRSV JOH 09:03 "Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God's works might be revealed in him.

NRSV JOH 09:04 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

NRSV JOH 09:05 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."

NRSV JOH 09:07 "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam"

NRSV JOH 09:11 'Go to Siloam and wash.'

NRSV JOH 09:35 "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

NRSV JOH 09:37 "You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he."

NRSV JOH 09:39 "I came into this world for judgement so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind."

NRSV JOH 09:41 "If you were blind, you would not have sin. But now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

NRSV JOH 10:01 "Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit.

NRSV JOH 10:02 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:03 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

NRSV JOH 10:04 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.

NRSV JOH 10:05 They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers."

NRSV JOH 10:07 "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:08 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them.

NRSV JOH 10:09 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.

NRSV JOH 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

NRSV JOH 10:11 "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:12 The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away - and the wolf snatches them and scatters them.

NRSV JOH 10:13 The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,

NRSV JOH 10:15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:16 I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

NRSV JOH 10:17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again.

NRSV JOH 10:18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father."

NRSV JOH 10:25 "I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name testify to me;

NRSV JOH 10:26 but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep.

NRSV JOH 10:27 My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.

NRSV JOH 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

NRSV JOH 10:29 my Father has given me is greater than all else, and no one can snatch it out of the Father's hand.

NRSV JOH 10:30 The Father and I are one."

NRSV JOH 10:32 "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone me?"

NRSV JOH 10:34 "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, you are gods?'

NRSV JOH 10:35 If those to whom the word of God came were called 'gods' - and the scripture cannot be annulled -

NRSV JOH 10:36 can you say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said, 'I am God's Son?'

NRSV JOH 10:37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me.

NRSV JOH 10:38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."

NRSV JOH 11:04 "This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

NRSV JOH 11:07 "Let us go to Judea again."

NRSV JOH 11:09 "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world.

NRSV JOH 11:10 But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them."

NRSV JOH 11:11 "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to awaken him."

NRSV JOH 11:14 "Lazarus is dead.

NRSV JOH 11:15 For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

NRSV JOH 11:23 "Your brother will rise again."

NRSV JOH 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live,

NRSV JOH 11:26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

NRSV JOH 11:34 "Where have you laid him?"

NRSV JOH 11:39 "Take away the stone."

NRSV JOH 11:40 "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"

NRSV JOH 11:41 "Father, I thank you for having heard me.

NRSV JOH 11:42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me."

NRSV JOH 11:43 "Lazarus, come out!"

NRSV JOH 11:44 "Unbind him, and let him go."

NRSV JOH 12:07 "Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial.

NRSV JOH 12:08 You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

NRSV JOH 12:23 "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

NRSV JOH 12:24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

NRSV JOH 12:25 Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

NRSV JOH 12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

NRSV JOH 12:27 "Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say - 'Father, save me from this hour?' No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.

NRSV JOH 12:28 Father, glorify your name."

NRSV JOH 12:30 "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

NRSV JOH 12:31 Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.

NRSV JOH 12:32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself."

NRSV JOH 12:34 the Son of Man must be lifted up?

NRSV JOH 12:35 "The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you. If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going.

NRSV JOH 12:36 While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light."

NRSV JOH 12:44 "Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 12:45 And whoever sees me sees him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 12:46 I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness.

NRSV JOH 12:47 I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.

NRSV JOH 12:48 The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge,

NRSV JOH 12:49 for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak.

NRSV JOH 12:50 And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me."

NRSV JOH 13:07 "You do not know now what I am doing, but later you will understand."

NRSV JOH 13:08 "Unless I wash you, you have no share with me."

NRSV JOH 13:10 "One who has bathed does not need to wash, except for the feet, but is entirely clean. And you are clean, though not all of you."

NRSV JOH 13:11 "Not all of you are clean."

NRSV JOH 13:12 "Do you know what I have done to you?

NRSV JOH 13:13 You call me Teacher and Lord - and you are right, for that is what I am.

NRSV JOH 13:14 So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.

NRSV JOH 13:15 For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.

NRSV JOH 13:16 Very truly, I tell you, servants are not greater than their master, nor are messengers greater than the one who sent them.

NRSV JOH 13:17 If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.

NRSV JOH 13:18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But it is to fulfil the scripture, 'The one who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.'

NRSV JOH 13:19 I tell you this now, before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe that I am he.

NRSV JOH 13:20 Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me."

NRSV JOH 13:21 "Very truly, I tell you, one of you will betray me."

NRSV JOH 13:26 "It is the one to whom I give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish."

NRSV JOH 13:27 "Do quickly what you are going to do."

NRSV JOH 13:31 "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.

NRSV JOH 13:32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once.

NRSV JOH 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.'

NRSV JOH 13:34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.

NRSV JOH 13:35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."

NRSV JOH 13:36 "Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow afterwards."

NRSV JOH 13:38 "Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.

NRSV JOH 14:01 "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.

NRSV JOH 14:02 In my Father's house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?

NRSV JOH 14:03 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also.

NRSV JOH 14:04 And you know the way to the place where I am going."

NRSV JOH 14:06 "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

NRSV JOH 14:07 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him."

NRSV JOH 14:09 "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father?'

NRSV JOH 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

NRSV JOH 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves.

NRSV JOH 14:12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.

NRSV JOH 14:13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

NRSV JOH 14:14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

NRSV JOH 14:15 "If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

NRSV JOH 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you for ever.

NRSV JOH 14:17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

NRSV JOH 14:18 "I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.

NRSV JOH 14:19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live.

NRSV JOH 14:20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.

NRSV JOH 14:21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them."

NRSV JOH 14:23 "Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

NRSV JOH 14:24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; and the word that you hear is not mine, but is from the Father who sent me.

NRSV JOH 14:25 "I have said these things to you while I am still with you.

NRSV JOH 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.

NRSV JOH 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.

NRSV JOH 14:28 You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I am coming to you.' If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I.

NRSV JOH 14:29 And now I have told you this before it occurs, so that when it does occur, you may believe.

NRSV JOH 14:30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me;

NRSV JOH 14:31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us be on our way.

NRSV JOH 15:01 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower.

NRSV JOH 15:02 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit.

NRSV JOH 15:03 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you.

NRSV JOH 15:04 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.

NRSV JOH 15:05 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.

NRSV JOH 15:06 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

NRSV JOH 15:07 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

NRSV JOH 15:08 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.

NRSV JOH 15:09 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.

NRSV JOH 15:10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.

NRSV JOH 15:11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

NRSV JOH 15:12 "This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.

NRSV JOH 15:13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.

NRSV JOH 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.

NRSV JOH 15:15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father.

NRSV JOH 15:16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name.

NRSV JOH 15:17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

NRSV JOH 15:18 "If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me before it hated you.

NRSV JOH 15:19 If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. Because you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world - therefore the world hates you.

NRSV JOH 15:20 Remember the word that I said to you, 'Servants are not greater than their master.' If they persecuted me, they will persecute you; if they kept my word, they will keep yours also.

NRSV JOH 15:21 But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

NRSV JOH 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.

NRSV JOH 15:23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also.

NRSV JOH 15:24 If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

NRSV JOH 15:25 It was to fulfil the word that is written in their law, "'hey hated me without a cause.'

NRSV JOH 15:26 "When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.

NRSV JOH 15:27 You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

NRSV JOH 16:01 "I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling.

NRSV JOH 16:02 They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God.

NRSV JOH 16:03 And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me.

NRSV JOH 16:04 But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.

NRSV JOH 16:05 But now I am going to him who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'

NRSV JOH 16:06 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts.

NRSV JOH 16:07 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

NRSV JOH 16:08 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement:

NRSV JOH 16:09 about sin, because they do not believe in me;

NRSV JOH 16:10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer;

NRSV JOH 16:11 about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

NRSV JOH 16:12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

NRSV JOH 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

NRSV JOH 16:14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

NRSV JOH 16:15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

NRSV JOH 16:16 "A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me."

NRSV JOH 16:17 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me;' . . . 'Because I am going to the Father?':

NRSV JOH 16:18 'a little while?'

NRSV JOH 16:19 "Are you discussing among yourselves what I meant when I said, 'A little while, and you will no longer see me, and again a little while, and you will see me?'

NRSV JOH 16:20 Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy.

NRSV JOH 16:21 When a woman is in labour, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world.

NRSV JOH 16:22 So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

NRSV JOH 16:23 On that day you will ask nothing of me. Very truly, I tell you, if you ask anything of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

NRSV JOH 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

NRSV JOH 16:25 "I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but will tell you plainly of the Father.

NRSV JOH 16:26 On that day you will ask in my name. I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;

NRSV JOH 16:27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

NRSV JOH 16:28 I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and am going to the Father."

NRSV JOH 16:31 "Do you now believe?

NRSV JOH 16:32 The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.

NRSV JOH 16:33 I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!"

NRSV JOH 17:01 "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you,

NRSV JOH 17:02 since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

NRSV JOH 17:03 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

NRSV JOH 17:04 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do.

NRSV JOH 17:05 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

NRSV JOH 17:06 "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.

NRSV JOH 17:07 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you;

NRSV JOH 17:08 for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

NRSV JOH 17:09 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours.

NRSV JOH 17:10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.

NRSV JOH 17:11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.

NRSV JOH 17:12 While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled.

NRSV JOH 17:13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.

NRSV JOH 17:14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

NRSV JOH 17:15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.

NRSV JOH 17:16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

NRSV JOH 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

NRSV JOH 17:18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

NRSV JOH 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.

NRSV JOH 17:20 "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word,

NRSV JOH 17:21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

NRSV JOH 17:22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one,

NRSV JOH 17:23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

NRSV JOH 17:24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

NRSV JOH 17:25 "Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me.

NRSV JOH 17:26 I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."

NRSV JOH 18:04 "Whom are you looking for?"

NRSV JOH 18:05 "I am he."

NRSV JOH 18:06 "I am he,"

NRSV JOH 18:07 "Whom are you looking for?"

NRSV JOH 18:08 "I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go."

NRSV JOH 18:09 "I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me."

NRSV JOH 18:11 "Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?"

NRSV JOH 18:20 "I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where all the Jews come together. I have said nothing in secret.

NRSV JOH 18:21 Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said to them; they know what I said."

NRSV JOH 18:23 "If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?"

NRSV JOH 18:34 "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?"

NRSV JOH 18:36 "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here."

NRSV JOH 18:37 "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice."

NRSV JOH 19:11 "You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."

NRSV JOH 19:26 "Woman, here is your son."

NRSV JOH 19:27 "Here is your mother."

NRSV JOH 19:28 "I am thirsty."

NRSV JOH 19:30 "It is finished."

NRSV JOH 20:15 "Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?"

NRSV JOH 20:16 "Mary!"

NRSV JOH 20:17 "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

NRSV JOH 20:19 "Peace be with you."

NRSV JOH 20:21 "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you."

NRSV JOH 20:22 "Receive the Holy Spirit.

NRSV JOH 20:23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

NRSV JOH 20:26 "Peace be with you."

NRSV JOH 20:27 "Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe."

NRSV JOH 20:29 "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe."

NRSV JOH 21:05 "Children, you have no fish, have you?"

NRSV JOH 21:06 "Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some."

NRSV JOH 21:10 "Bring some of the fish that you have just caught."

NRSV JOH 21:12 "Come and have breakfast."

NRSV JOH 21:15 "Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?" . . . "Feed my lambs."

NRSV JOH 21:16 "Simon son of John, do you love me?" . . . "Tend my sheep."

NRSV JOH 21:17 "Simon son of John, do you love me?" . . . "Do you love me?" . . . "Feed my sheep.

NRSV JOH 21:18 Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go."

NRSV JOH 21:19 "Follow me."

NRSV JOH 21:22 "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? Follow me!"

NRSV JOH 21:23 "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?"

The Revelation of St. John the Divine (REV)

NRSV REV 01:08 "I am the Alpha and the Omega,' . . . who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

NRSV REV 01:11 "Write in a book what you see and send it to the seven churches, to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."

NRSV REV 01:17 "Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last,

NRSV REV 01:18 and the living one. I was dead, and see, I am alive for ever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.

NRSV REV 01:19 Now write what you have seen, what is, and what is to take place after this.

NRSV REV 01:20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

NRSV REV 02:01 "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand, who walks among the seven golden lampstands:

NRSV REV 02:02 "I know your works, your toil and your patient endurance. I know that you cannot tolerate evildoers; you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them to be false.

NRSV REV 02:03 I also know that you are enduring patiently and bearing up for the sake of my name, and that you have not grown weary.

NRSV REV 02:04 But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

NRSV REV 02:05 Remember then from what you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

NRSV REV 02:06 Yet this is to your credit: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.

NRSV REV 02:07 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers, I will give permission to eat from the tree of life that is in the paradise of God.

NRSV REV 02:08 "And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: These are the words of the first and the last, who was dead and came to life:

NRSV REV 02:09 "I know your affliction and your poverty, even though you are rich. I know the slander on the part of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

NRSV REV 02:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Beware, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have affliction. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

NRSV REV 02:11 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Whoever conquers will not be harmed by the second death.

NRSV REV 02:12 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: These are the words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword:

NRSV REV 02:13 "I know where you are living, where Satan's throne is. Yet you are holding fast to my name, and you did not deny your faith in me even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan lives.

NRSV REV 02:14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling-block before the people of Israel, so that they would eat food sacrificed to idols and practise fornication.

NRSV REV 02:15 So you also have some who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

NRSV REV 02:16 Repent then. If not, I will come to you soon and make war against them with the sword of my mouth.

NRSV REV 02:17 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. To everyone who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.

NRSV REV 02:18 "And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze:

NRSV REV 02:19 "I know your works - your love, faith, service, and patient endurance. I know that your last works are greater than the first.

NRSV REV 02:20 But I have this against you: you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet and is teaching and beguiling my servants to practise fornication and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

NRSV REV 02:21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her fornication.

NRSV REV 02:22 Beware, I am throwing her on a bed, and those who commit adultery with her I am throwing into great distress, unless they repent of her doings;

NRSV REV 02:23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve.

NRSV REV 02:24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call 'the deep things of Satan,' to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden;

NRSV REV 02:25 only hold fast to what you have until I come.

NRSV REV 02:26 To everyone who conquers and continues to do my works to the end, I will give authority over the nations;

NRSV REV 02:27 to rule them with an iron rod, as when clay pots are shattered -

NRSV REV 02:28 even as I also received authority from my Father. To the one who conquers I will also give the morning star.

NRSV REV 02:29 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

NRSV REV 03:01 "And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars: "I know your works; you have a name for being alive, but you are dead.

NRSV REV 03:02 Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is at the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God.

NRSV REV 03:03 Remember then what you received and heard; obey it, and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.

NRSV REV 03:04 Yet you have still a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes; they will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy.

NRSV REV 03:05 If you conquer, you will be clothed like them in white robes, and I will not blot your name out of the book of life; I will confess your name before my Father and before his angels.

NRSV REV 03:06 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

NRSV REV 03:07 "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens:

NRSV REV 03:08 "I know your works. Look, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

NRSV REV 03:09 I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but are lying - I will make them come and bow down before your feet, and they will learn that I have loved you.

NRSV REV 03:10 Because you have kept my word of patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

NRSV REV 03:11 I am coming soon; hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.

NRSV REV 03:12 If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God; you will never go out of it. I will write on you the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name.

NRSV REV 03:13 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.

NRSV REV 03:14 "And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the origin of God's creation:

NRSV REV 03:15 "I know your works; you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were either cold or hot.

NRSV REV 03:16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

NRSV REV 03:17 For you say, 'I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.' You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.

NRSV REV 03:18 Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

NRSV REV 03:19 I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent.

NRSV REV 03:20 Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.

NRSV REV 03:21 To the one who conquers I will give a place with me on my throne, just as I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

NRSV REV 03:22 Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches."

NRSV REV 22:07 "See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book."

NRSV REV 22:12 "See, I am coming soon; my reward is with me, to repay according to everyone's work.

NRSV REV 22:13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

NRSV REV 22:16 "It is I, Jesus, who sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star."

NRSV REV 22:20 "Surely I am coming soon."
