NIV MAT 03:15 "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness."

NIV MAT 05:19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

NIV MAT 05:20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

NIV MAT 05:21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.'

NIV MAT 05:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, 'Raca,' is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.

NIV MAT 05:23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you,

NIV MAT 05:24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

NIV MAT 05:25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

NIV MAT 05:26 Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.

NIV MAT 05:27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'

NIV MAT 05:28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

NIV MAT 05:29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

NIV MAT 05:30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.

NIV MAT 05:31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.'

NIV MAT 05:32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

NIV MAT 05:33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.'

NIV MAT 05:34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne;

NIV MAT 05:35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

NIV MAT 05:36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black.

NIV MAT 05:37 All you need to say is simply 'Yes' or 'No;' anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

NIV MAT 05:38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'

NIV MAT 05:39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.

NIV MAT 05:40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

NIV MAT 05:41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.

NIV MAT 05:42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

NIV MAT 05:43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'

NIV MAT 05:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

NIV MAT 05:45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

NIV MAT 05:46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?

NIV MAT 05:47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

NIV MAT 05:48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

NIV MAT 06:01 "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.

NIV MAT 06:02 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

NIV MAT 06:03 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

NIV MAT 06:04 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

NIV MAT 06:05 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

NIV MAT 06:06 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

NIV MAT 06:07 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.

NIV MAT 06:08 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

NIV MAT 06:09 "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

NIV MAT 06:10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

NIV MAT 06:11 Give us today our daily bread.

NIV MAT 06:12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

NIV MAT 06:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

NIV MAT 06:14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

NIV MAT 06:15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

NIV MAT 06:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

NIV MAT 06:17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

NIV MAT 06:18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

NIV MAT 06:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

NIV MAT 06:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

NIV MAT 06:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

NIV MAT 06:22 "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.

NIV MAT 06:23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

NIV MAT 06:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

NIV MAT 06:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?

NIV MAT 06:26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

NIV MAT 06:27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

NIV MAT 06:28 "And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.

NIV MAT 06:29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

NIV MAT 06:30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you - you of little faith?

NIV MAT 06:31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'

NIV MAT 06:32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

NIV MAT 06:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

NIV MAT 06:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

NIV MAT 07:01 "Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

NIV MAT 07:02 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

NIV MAT 07:03 "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

NIV MAT 07:04 How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

NIV MAT 07:05 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

NIV MAT 07:06 "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.

NIV MAT 07:07 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

NIV MAT 07:08 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

NIV MAT 07:09 "Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone?

NIV MAT 07:10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?

NIV MAT 07:11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

NIV MAT 07:12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

NIV MAT 07:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

NIV MAT 07:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

NIV MAT 07:15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.

NIV MAT 07:16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?

NIV MAT 07:17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

NIV MAT 07:18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

NIV MAT 07:19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

NIV MAT 07:20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

NIV MAT 07:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

NIV MAT 07:22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?'

NIV MAT 07:23 Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

NIV MAT 07:24 "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

NIV MAT 07:25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

NIV MAT 07:26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

NIV MAT 07:27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

NIV MAT 08:04 "See that you don't tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."

NIV MAT 09:17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved."

NIV MAT 10:11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave.

NIV MAT 10:12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.

NIV MAT 10:13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you.

NIV MAT 10:14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.

NIV MAT 10:15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

NIV MAT 10:16 "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.

NIV MAT 10:17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.

NIV MAT 10:18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.

NIV MAT 10:19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say,

NIV MAT 10:20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

NIV MAT 10:21 "Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.

NIV MAT 10:22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

NIV MAT 10:23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

NIV MAT 10:24 "The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.

NIV MAT 10:25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!

NIV MAT 10:26 "So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

NIV MAT 10:27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs.

NIV MAT 10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

NIV MAT 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care.

NIV MAT 10:30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

NIV MAT 10:31 So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

NIV MAT 10:32 "Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.

NIV MAT 10:33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.

NIV MAT 10:34 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

NIV MAT 10:35 For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -

NIV MAT 10:36 a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.'

NIV MAT 10:37 "Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

NIV MAT 10:38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

NIV MAT 10:39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.

NIV MAT 10:40 "Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

NIV MAT 10:41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.

NIV MAT 10:42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward."

NIV MAT 11:04 "Go back and report to John what you hear and see:

NIV MAT 11:05 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.

NIV MAT 11:06 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me."

NIV MAT 11:07 "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?

NIV MAT 11:08 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces.

NIV MAT 11:09 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

NIV MAT 11:10 This is the one about whom it is written: "'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'

NIV MAT 11:11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

NIV MAT 11:12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence, and violent people have been raiding it.

NIV MAT 11:13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.

NIV MAT 11:14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

NIV MAT 11:15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.

NIV MAT 11:16 "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:

NIV MAT 11:17 "'We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.'

NIV MAT 11:18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'

NIV MAT 11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is proved right by her deeds."

NIV MAT 11:21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

NIV MAT 11:22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

NIV MAT 11:23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

NIV MAT 11:24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you."

NIV MAT 11:25 "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

NIV MAT 11:26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

NIV MAT 11:27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

NIV MAT 11:28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

NIV MAT 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

NIV MAT 11:30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

NIV MAT 12:03 "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?

NIV MAT 12:04 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread - which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.

NIV MAT 12:05 Or haven't you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath and yet are innocent?

NIV MAT 12:06 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.

NIV MAT 12:07 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent.

NIV MAT 12:08 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

NIV MAT 12:11 "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out?

NIV MAT 12:12 How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

NIV MAT 12:25 "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

NIV MAT 12:26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?

NIV MAT 12:27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.

NIV MAT 21:35 "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third.

NIV LUK 11:35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.

NIV LUK 11:47 "Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.

NIV LUK 11:48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.

NIV LUK 11:49 Because of this, God in his wisdom said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.'

NIV LUK 11:50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world,

NIV LUK 11:51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.

NIV LUK 11:52 "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering."

NIV LUK 12:01 "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

NIV LUK 12:02 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.

NIV LUK 12:03 What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.

NIV LUK 12:04 "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more.

NIV LUK 12:05 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

NIV LUK 12:06 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.

NIV LUK 12:07 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

NIV LUK 12:08 "I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.

NIV LUK 12:09 But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God.

NIV LUK 12:10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

NIV LUK 12:11 "When you are brought before synagogues, rulers and authorities, do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say,

NIV LUK 12:12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say."

NIV LUK 12:14 "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"

NIV LUK 12:15 "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions."

NIV LUK 12:16 "The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest.

NIV LUK 12:17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'

NIV LUK 12:18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain.

NIV LUK 12:19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry."'

NIV LUK 12:20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'

NIV LUK 12:21 "This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God."

NIV LUK 12:22 "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.

NIV LUK 12:23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.

NIV LUK 12:24 Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

NIV LUK 12:25 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life?

NIV LUK 12:26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

NIV LUK 12:27 "Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

NIV LUK 12:28 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you - you of little faith!

NIV LUK 12:29 And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.

NIV LUK 12:30 For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them.

NIV LUK 12:31 But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

NIV LUK 12:32 "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.

NIV LUK 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.

NIV LUK 12:34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

NIV LUK 12:35 "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,

NIV LUK 12:36 like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him.

NIV LUK 12:37 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.

NIV LUK 12:38 It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.

NIV LUK 12:39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.

NIV LUK 12:40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

NIV LUK 12:42 "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time?

NIV LUK 12:43 It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns.

NIV LUK 12:44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.

NIV LUK 12:45 But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the other servants, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk.

NIV LUK 12:46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

NIV LUK 12:47 "The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.

NIV LUK 12:48 But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

NIV LUK 12:49 "I have come to bring fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!

NIV LUK 12:50 But I have a baptism to undergo, and what constraint I am under until it is completed!

NIV LUK 12:51 Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division.

NIV LUK 12:52 From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three.

NIV LUK 12:53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."

NIV LUK 12:54 "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.

NIV LUK 12:55 And when the south wind blows, you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.

NIV LUK 12:56 Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don't know how to interpret this present time?

NIV LUK 12:57 "Why don't you judge for yourselves what is right?

NIV LUK 12:58 As you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, try hard to be reconciled on the way, or your adversary may drag you off to the judge, and the judge turn you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

NIV LUK 12:59 I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny."

NIV LUK 13:02 "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way?

NIV LUK 13:03 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

NIV LUK 13:04 Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them - do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?

NIV LUK 13:05 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."

NIV LUK 13:06 "A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it but did not find any.

NIV LUK 13:07 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, 'For three years now I've been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven't found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?'

NIV LUK 13:08 "'Sir,' the man replied, 'leave it alone for one more year, and I'll dig around it and fertilize it.

NIV LUK 13:09 If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.'"

NIV LUK 13:12 "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."

NIV LUK 13:15 "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?

NIV LUK 13:16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"

NIV LUK 13:18 "What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?

NIV LUK 13:19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches."

NIV LUK 13:20 "What shall I compare the kingdom of God to?

NIV LUK 13:21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough."

NIV LUK 13:24 "Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.

NIV LUK 13:25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, 'Sir, open the door for us.' "But he will answer, 'I don't know you or where you come from.'

NIV LUK 13:26 "Then you will say, 'We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.'

NIV LUK 13:27 "But he will reply, 'I don't know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!'

NIV LUK 13:28 "There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out.

NIV LUK 13:29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God.

NIV LUK 13:30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last."

NIV LUK 13:32 "Go tell that fox, 'I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal.'

NIV LUK 13:33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day - for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

NIV LUK 13:34 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

NIV LUK 13:35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

NIV LUK 14:03 "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?"

NIV LUK 14:05 "If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?"

NIV LUK 14:08 "When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.

NIV LUK 14:09 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this person your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.

NIV LUK 14:10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.

NIV LUK 14:11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."

NIV LUK 14:12 "When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.

NIV LUK 14:13 But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,

NIV LUK 14:14 and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

NIV LUK 14:16 "A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests.

NIV LUK 14:17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, 'Come, for everything is now ready.'

NIV LUK 14:18 "But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, 'I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.'

NIV LUK 14:19 "Another said, 'I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I'm on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.'

NIV LUK 14:20 "Still another said, 'I just got married, so I can't come.'

NIV LUK 14:21 "The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, 'Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.'

NIV LUK 14:22 "'Sir,' the servant said, 'what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.'

NIV LUK 14:23 "Then the master told his servant, 'Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.

NIV LUK 14:24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.'"

NIV LUK 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters - yes, even their own life - such a person cannot be my disciple.

NIV LUK 14:27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

NIV LUK 14:28 "Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won't you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

NIV LUK 14:29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,

NIV LUK 14:30 saying, 'This person began to build and wasn't able to finish.'

NIV LUK 14:31 "Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won't he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?

NIV LUK 14:32 If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.

NIV LUK 14:33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.

NIV LUK 14:34 "Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?

NIV LUK 14:35 It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear."

NIV LUK 15:04 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

NIV LUK 15:05 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders

NIV LUK 15:06 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.'

NIV LUK 15:07 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

NIV LUK 15:08 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn't she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

NIV LUK 15:09 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.'

NIV LUK 15:10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents."

NIV LUK 15:11 "There was a man who had two sons.

NIV LUK 15:12 The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' So he divided his property between them.

NIV LUK 15:13 "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.

NIV LUK 15:14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.

NIV LUK 15:15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

NIV LUK 15:16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

NIV LUK 15:17 "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!

NIV LUK 15:18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

NIV LUK 15:19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.'

NIV LUK 15:20 So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

NIV LUK 15:21 "The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'

NIV LUK 15:22 "But the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

NIV LUK 15:23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate.

NIV LUK 15:24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate.

NIV LUK 15:25 "Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.

NIV LUK 15:26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.

NIV LUK 15:27 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'

NIV LUK 15:28 "The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him.

NIV LUK 15:29 But he answered his father, 'Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

NIV LUK 15:30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!'

NIV LUK 15:31 "'My son,' the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

NIV LUK 15:32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.'"

NIV LUK 16:01 "There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.

NIV LUK 16:02 So he called him in and asked him, 'What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.'

NIV LUK 16:03 "The manager said to himself, 'What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I'm not strong enough to dig, and I'm ashamed to beg -

NIV LUK 16:04 I know what I'll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.'

NIV LUK 16:05 So he called in each one of his master's debtors. He asked the first, 'How much do you owe my master?'

NIV LUK 16:06 "'Nine hundred gallons of olive oil,' he replied. "The manager told him, 'Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.'

NIV LUK 16:07 "Then he asked the second, 'And how much do you owe?' "'A thousand bushels of wheat,' he replied. "He told him, 'Take your bill and make it eight hundred.'

NIV LUK 16:08 "The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.

NIV LUK 16:09 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

NIV LUK 16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

NIV LUK 16:11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?

NIV LUK 16:12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own?

NIV LUK 16:13 "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

NIV LUK 16:15 "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God's sight.

NIV LUK 16:16 "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing their way into it.

NIV LUK 16:17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.

NIV LUK 16:18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

NIV LUK 16:19 "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.

NIV LUK 16:20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores

NIV LUK 16:21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

NIV LUK 16:22 "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.

NIV LUK 16:23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.

NIV LUK 16:24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'

NIV LUK 16:25 "But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.

NIV LUK 16:26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.'

NIV LUK 16:27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,

NIV LUK 16:28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'

NIV LUK 16:29 "Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.'

NIV LUK 16:30 "'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.'

NIV LUK 16:31 "He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.'"

NIV LUK 17:01 "Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come.

NIV LUK 17:02 It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.

NIV LUK 17:03 So watch yourselves. "If your brother or sister sins against you, rebuke them; and if they repent, forgive them.

NIV LUK 17:04 Even if they sin against you seven times in a day and seven times come back to you saying 'I repent,' you must forgive them."

NIV LUK 17:06 "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you.

NIV LUK 17:07 "Suppose one of you has a servant plowing or looking after the sheep. Will he say to the servant when he comes in from the field, 'Come along now and sit down to eat?'

NIV LUK 17:08 Won't he rather say, 'Prepare my supper, get yourself ready and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may eat and drink?'

NIV LUK 17:09 Will he thank the servant because he did what he was told to do?

NIV LUK 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'"

NIV LUK 17:14 "Go, show yourselves to the priests."

NIV LUK 17:17 "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine?

NIV LUK 17:18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?"

NIV LUK 17:19 "Rise and go; your faith has made you well."

NIV LUK 17:20 "The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed,

NIV LUK 17:21 nor will people say, 'Here it is,' or 'There it is,' because the kingdom of God is in your midst."

NIV LUK 17:22 "The time is coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it.

NIV LUK 17:23 People will tell you, 'There he is!' or 'Here he is!' Do not go running off after them.

NIV LUK 17:24 For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other.

NIV LUK 17:25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.

NIV LUK 17:26 "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man.

NIV LUK 17:27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

NIV LUK 17:28 "It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.

NIV LUK 17:29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all.

NIV LUK 17:30 "It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed.

NIV LUK 17:31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything.
